I'm assuming, like most VTubers, you make video game content. There are two main reasons I watch video game related content. Either someone has done something extraordinary in the game, in which case, the content speaks for itself. Or, someone is providing commentary.

If you are not an insanely good gamer, you can still provide commentary.

For instance, let's say I was watching a Don't Starve stream. I want to hear why someone is making the decisions they make to build a base in a certain area. If I have to wait for them to type their response, it's going to take them longer to communicate their commentary than it would if they just spoke.

If I wanted to read text discussions of a game, I would just go on /v/. VTubing is an audio-visual medium. The audio is part of the appeal. I understand being nervous about putting your voice out there, and there are plenty of valid concerns you may have: maybe you want to stay anonymous, maybe you don't like the sound of your voice.

But, the reality is, you will be less competitive in the space if you choose not to speak. That's a loss of a competitive edge that only you can control and that's an opportunity cost only you can weigh.

For any video, people are likely going to want some type of audio in the background. This means you might want to add some royalty-free background music to your streams if you're not going to use a mic.

If you wanted to do something like art streaming or handcams, but don't want to talk, I would still avoid using a VTuber avatar because that avatar will take up screen real estate that you could use to show off the main focus of your stream.
