I've been in the vtuber scene since 2017, and Kizuna Ai didn't blow up until mid '17. Siro started mid '17, even BararaKaren are '17. Kaguya Luna didn't explode until Christmas '17. And international shit didn't really start proper until mid-late 2018. Pretty much the only vtuber alive in 2016 (other than memes like annoying orange and Ami Yamato, which don't count because Aichan coined the term) was Kizuna Ai.

Kizuna Ai was talked about in /jp/ way before she became popular. I was very active in some of the first threads, in early 2017 when she hadn't even reached 10k subs. We used the now deprecated youtube hero thing to add subtitles to her videos.
There's no fucking way in hell she was in the vtuber scene before 2017, primarily because there wasn't one until mid-late 2017 when she exploded and others started capitalizing (some quite unsuccessfully, like BararaKaren and YUA).

In JP the vtuber chronology includes the "PNGtubers" that predated Vtubers.

There were a ton of threads in both /jp/ and /cgl/ even as far back as 2014 about those content creators. They were referred to as avatarfags on the imageboard, dunno how normies referred to them.

Hell no, avatarfags relate to right-leaning, usually gamergate-related such as Jim (InternetAristocrat back then) or Sargon (who Kirsche keeps on watching videos from, fuck my life).
There WERE some "aspiring voice actresses" in japanese streaming sites like Nicovideo and SHOWROOM, maybe chink sites such as bilibili too, who eventually became vtubers. But even if she was one of them, that doesn't mean she was part of the vtuber sphere in 2016, because there was no sphere in 2016. She just googled when vtubing started and, in the most retarded of ways, ascribed herself to that year. She could've said 2018 and it would've been completely believable and still quite valid, but she didn't, so she's full of shit.
