43302959 No.43302959 [Reply] [Original]

Cover has 54.7 MILLION USD of cash and deposits on the books as of end of Dec 2022. The main liability is 34.0 MILLION USD of advance payment of merch etc. Or to put it another way fans have loaned Cover a cool 34 mil for about six months, interest free. Aren't preorders great?

By the way the IPO will raise about 7.9 mil at 1.5 mil share offering and the 710 yen starting price. Additional shares from investors don't give any money to Cover.
Anycolor's IPO price increased from 1530 starting price to 4810 at market open, or 314%, most of that through the bidding process. If Cover's bids up the same percentage, it will open at around 2230 yen and net about 24.9 mil USD raised. Or less than half the cash they have on hand already.

I hope that money is being saved up for HoloFes and the studio, because holding a cool 75-100 mil by the end of FY2023 is kind of crazy.

If the company is run competently they parcel away what they expect the preorders to cost to fulfill and can do what they want with the rest
When I say parcel away often that means they can put it in safe short-term investments and earn interest from it..
For example say they were paid 30 mil, the preorders likely only will cost 20 mil to make, they save the 20 mil and use it to pay for making and shipping the merch. They are free to do what they want with the other 10 mil.

But there are no rules. That's why so many kickstarters fail to deliver.

So for what was seemingly a global phenomenon that has had immense success for 3+ years...isn't ~55 million kind of a paltry amount? I dunno, I don't think I was expecting a billion dollar company but I think I was expecting a few hundred million. Is vtubing really that much of a niche that even an overwhelming success like Hololive is a modest company compared to others?

The place I work has a similar thing. We take in payments from consumers for [thing] and we pay out to the merchants monthly, or quarterly, so we float a lot of money. As I understand it, it goes into a special kind of account for businesses with this exact situation, and we get something like 2% on it. Not enough to keep up with inflation, but better than having it in a business checking or savings account.
The "financialization of everything" is real, but it isn't always negative. We aren't a big company, about 50 people total, but that extra bit probably pays for 2 people's salaries. Just taking money that we are holding onto anyway and putting in the right place keeps two people employed.

how does the 'total liabilities and net assets' figure equal the 'total assets' figure? it seems like half of cover's assets are in intangible assets, such as vtuber models. I think the 'assets minus liabilities' figure is more accurate in describing cover's financial resources. judging by how cover's assets are valued, they seem to be financially solvent at least.

So Cash on Hand is not a metric of success well it is but not always. Cash on Hand is for the most part a rainy day fund for companies it is the money left over after all expenditures that the company has nothing to do with the money so they just hold it.

So a few things on hand is not taking into account the money Cover has spent on R&D, scouting, and business operations. It also does not account for employee wages and how much the talents are receiving from merch sales which many talents have said that they can get much better cuts out of merch sales.

Finally and this is the biggest. Covers biggest asset is their talents and we have no idea how much the talents are worth because they do not enter the market. How do you value different talents?

It does make sense if you look at the events. Birthday concert was gimped and Daki denied because loli. See that Dino Gura has obliterated records for most merch sale by a huge margin (I don't think any other Hololive girl has said they've beaten it yet). Approve daki after, give her 3D live but still gimp that as well as expect similar or even bigger merch sales than the Dino Gura. This is probably what pushed them to IPO. They probably had IPO on their minds for a while but they had to align their pieces and events to capitalize on it for next year and the time seemed right.
