What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

You know I don't think my people are out there, like I'm one of a kind and nobody will ever get me. Like I'll always feel like an alien interacting with others.
At least I can stop looking now and wallow in loneliness. I'll always be maidenless. Why am I even streaming.

Anons who say they hate their voice, question: Do you mean you hate the way it sounds on a recording, or do you hate it all the time (even when listening to yourself talk IRL)?

I feel like whenever I hear myself talk IRL, I’m like oh wow I sound pretty good. Then I record myself and play it back and it sounds like a completely different person. Does anyone have advice for this? Like is there a way to make my voice on recordings sound more like it does to me in my head?

This has really been making me sad the past few weeks. My voice sounds so great through my own head and so bad on recording. It’s like triggering dysphoria or something.

You'd best be doing vocal reps and I think you'll start to appreciate your voice. I started with the realization that I hate my voice after hearing my own recording, but after doing tons of vocal reps, it's becoming more like a constant love-hate relationship.
I wish it could be more crisp, have a nicer timbre, more shonen protag-like, etc. Some days when I study the way voice actors and top chuubas speak, I feel like no matter how hard I train, I couldn't reach their level. On the flip side, the more I do my reps, the more I love the ways I can utilize my voice despite its shittiness. It's like having an old car with constant troubles that you just can't let go

I'm gonna audition for stars again since apparently they're still looking, the audition reminder was on the 18th of december I think, and not much after we got the new tempus guys so I assume they want some more for the future. I'm not currently a vtuber and I'm not gonna invest in a model just for a chance to join a corpo, that seems fucking stupid when I already know how to fucking stream. The experience should matter, with or without the model being there.

But I'd say try to get in anyway so you can be the change you want to see in the branch, because that's exactly what I'd like to do. I like Vesper and that's pretty much it, for the most part the rest are pretty meh. I think they did really well. The models were an improvement over the first gen that had so much awkward and goofy issues. They did really well, people will complain but you should see past it. They got tens of thousands to watch them and sub. You should also look past any character flaws working with them.

The problem might really be you and your shortcomings. You have to conduct yourself in a certain way and work with people you don't get to choose. That's just life though, if you enter other industries you'll have the same issue.

>At work while at peak times
If you're not deluded about getting peak numbers out the gate, that seems like a non-issue. Without experience, it seems unlikely that you'd have the mental energy to stream all through peak hours anyway.
>Not very entertaining
This is the only real obstacle, but it's also the one you have the most control over. I can't give good advice without knowing more about you, but there's gotta be a way you can start to improve that, even if it's just getting into the habit of blatantly copying your favorite content creators. That's how I got started.

It won't take you that long if you're only making clips, subtitles if you use those is the longest part of editing clips. If you do have funny money you can pay someone to do that.

But yes, visuals for your stream would be a good starting point, but I would go ahead and start scouting people out for your model, it has to reflect what you're doing on your stream and what the stream will look like. Get some Indian guy on fiverr to do half of these, only real hard part is the model.

I think you are kinda right, but I would not say "instead". I think there is a palce for both imitating others and just using your normal voice. Eventually you can play with the components of your voice and train for it to be second nature. Once that second nature emerges based on your aesthetics preferences and inherent vocal (and even of personality given how voice can color it) characteristics, you can say that your natural voice is here. So, I'm struggling putting a gif in a StreamElements alert. It seems to be constantly playing, and never actually starts/ends when it should.

I read some solutions online saying to just use webms, but probably the transparency brutally fucks them over because it's a corrupted disaster. Are there any other options?

When trying to draw an audience before debut, what is the preferred timeframe between initial "hello i am new vtuber" tweet and actual debut? I was going to shoot for a week. I know that that probably isn't enough time but in all honestly i would rather just plop down first tweet and be streaming maybe an hour later, regardless of audience.
also, not intending on doing a debut stream, but a roughly 5 minute video giving introduction, brief rundown of lore, type of content planned, and basic scheduling frame. ideally posting this a day or two before the first stream on that build up week.
Good idea, or nah?

The fact that I have to ask this probably means I'm not gonna make it but I have to:
How to you build a community? I'm sure that in order to make it you need to keep you're viewers engaged even when you're offline, but i don't know how to make that happen.
Making a Discord server seems like a first step, but I'm afraid of it being barren and only serving as a "going live" notification dispenser.

The community is the hardest part of any streaming. I'm the marketing anon from earlier, I'll give you some advice.

1. Take advantage of human psychology.
People spend time with streamers because their lives are boring. So when you start streaming, you are inviting them into a part of the world that is not supposed to be boring. So what this means for you is to host giveaways, do competitions, invite friends, etc. because you are creating the entertainment, not the viewers.

2. Make it super easy to get into your discord and encourage it.
Use giveaways, use people hanging out in your discord, host events like having your viewers come play with you, etc. It should be basically everywhere, and it should be easy to access. And don't overfill that shit with channels, keep it nice and simple, 5-7 channels max, maybe a VC section. No one wants to join a new community with 500 options. They want announcements - stream schedule, important info, general chat, and slightly dead but still gets traffic channel, VC, and that's pretty much it.

3. Pay attention to how other discords operate and adjust accordingly.
Just in general, take in data, and use it to your advantage. You notice that giveaways are a hot meta to grow a community? You should probably go put some money in and run some giveaways. Looks like clips of people playing horror games are doing good on TikTok/Youtube? You should probably play horror games and start making those mountains move. Collab streams doing good? You should already be networking with other VTubers and extending to play/do activities with them so both of you can cross-pollinate and grow audiences. The point is, you have a brain and can tell where people are heading towards if you pay attention to the signs, and you can adjust accordingly.

>b-but I wanna do my retro video game stream

You can do any stream you want, it just depends on what success you want to chase. There's a reason why people follow the trends, that's very important to understand if you want to grow fast, otherwise you are probably on a slow burn.

a bunch of babi males in the aspcord were being creepy to her because her model is a loli and mocking her so she got mad, called them trannies and left. I check the aspcord from time to time and it's really fucking embarrassing how people post sexpest tier in it. If jingx wants people to not leave he has to make some real rules and enforce them to keep people from being downright gross.

I think it's fine if it's something small and insignificant like
>"hey guys there was this old lady at the shop wearing a gamerheadset to talk with someone to help her with shopping. It was probably her grandsons or something, was very funny to see"
But if it's something more involved like
>"hey guys I have a boyfriend now!"
That's bad because it's something viewers will remember and ask you about and you'll have to go to silly lengths to keep the act up.

Sometimes I tell a story to someone that's actually a story I heard on 4chan but I tell it as if it's something that a friend told me happened to them personally
