If that's any consolation, starting 1.18 mobs will only spawn when the blocklight level is 0. Now they spawn when the light level is 7 or lower.
That means a single torch will be able to stop mobs from spawning within a radius of 13 blocks instead of 6.
A single glow lichen will be able to stop mobs from spawning just like currently a single torch can

I had started playing this year, and was surprised how comfy it is. I thought it's game for retarded adhd kids, but authors actually designed the game for immersive, single player game. Going slowly by yourself, step by step, discovering what you can do and the world around you. Very, very cozy.

But of course, playing on PS4 with 4 pads on the couch is great fun in it's own way as well. I would build castles with kids and then besiege each other, shooting with cannons and bows. Can't describe how fun it is running on the great walls you meticulously build earlier and shooting each other like in fps game. Yea, it's a very large sandbox.
