I guess there are pros and cons to valve having infinite money. It lets them work on cool shit like the index and then alyx which might not have even been profitable, but it also lets them ignore old IPs that aren't exciting to work on anymore.
Which is sad, because a game the size of TF2 could keep smaller studios running just by itself, but for valve it's a drop in the ocean.
