/auds/ Thread # 13

Question of the Thread: (Since we were having a good discussion about this last thread) Where is your balance between making content and networking yourself? If you've already debuted, what balance has worked for you? Any pitfalls or traps?

What is /auds/?
A thread where we discuss our vtuber aspirations! Where it's agency-based or independent, let's help each other grow and make it as entertainers. Indies are welcome to join, but shill responsibility. Share what knowledge, insights, what works/doesn't work for you.

FAQ:
Do I need an expensive rigged Live2D model to be a vtuber?
You do not! A simple .png avatar can be enough to get started.

Where can I learn how to Live2D rig avatars?
Brian Tsui of Iron Vertex has many tutorials available on his youtube channel

[Microphone Copy Pasta]

Here's a few tips for all of you about microphones for all of you:

First:
-If you are starting, take a look at what you have around, maybe your gaming headset will be good enough to start.
-If you have a rockband mic laying around stored in some box, it may do the job too, stick a pantyhose on top of it to stop plosives, cut a hole on a ceral box to have it serve as a mic stand and voi-lá. This used to be the beginner youtuber special back in 2011~2013 and it worked very well.
-Check the noise reduction filters and equalization in OBS (or maybe use NVIDIA RTX Voice if your card is compatible) for some boost in quality.
The important is to start.
-Study mic technique, a lot of quality improvement can be done without spending a cent:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ty8YLqOmbV4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAKnCEsZ_og

After you begin and you look into into buying a mic to improve your audio quality keep in mind a few things:
-"pro" audio requires a lot of investment in equipment, acoustic treatment, mixing, etc. A lot of your favorite vtubers and regular youtuber and streamers don't have it and do just fine.
-USB mics are generally not the top end of the microphones contrary to what Blue's marketing team may want you to believe, but a good quality one is more than serviceable. If you're not that tech inclined and want an all-in-one quick solution, consider one.
- A good XLR mic, a boom arm, a pop filer and good audio interface will be enough. Don't get lost chasing "the best", don't get lost into the audiophole rabbit hole, it'll cost you a lot of for increasingly diminishing returns that most of your
viewers and won't notice.
- If you are on a tight budget, look for dynamic microphones, a Shure SM-48 with a windscreen, an XLR-to-USB adapter or a cheap audio interface will be cheaper and beat in quality most USB mics at thrice the price.
-Take into consideration your needs - lot of streamers, for example just use condenser mics because it's "studio quality" but can't get the quality they may potentially output or do anything that will really benefit from having one (like raw music vocals to for mixing).
-Going off from the last point, if you are not recording music (I don't mean Karaoke streams with some reverb kicked in, I mean actually recording vocals for mixes or professional voice overs) consider dynamic mics instead of condensers like most big streamers do, it'll save you a lot of headaches.

About Mic types, there are basically two that matter for you.
Condenser mics:
- A lot of people who do livestreams use these; They are your Blue Yetis, AT2020s and similar.
-Usually are called studio mics, and there's a reason for that. While give you a nice voice recording with a fuller range of capture, to make the most out of them you need a controlled, studio environment.
-They are more expensive by themselves, often require more accessories (not only a boom arm, but shock mouths and the like), and are often overly sensitive (which is why you get a lot of mouse and keyboard noises when people are playing).
-To make them sound the best they can will require acoustic treatment of the room you record (because they are sensitive and capture the sound waves bouncing on hard surfaces and that messes with your quality) or home-made recording studio/booth (or a makeshift one, like getting inside of a closet full of clothes or recording inside a pillow for).

Dynamics mics:
-These are the stage mics, most of you will be familiar with handheld ones stick with the little ball on top of it (but many can have different shapes and look as "studio-like" as the Condensers).
-They're usually very good at not capturing the noise that's not immediately in front of them, which is why they're used for concerts, churches, TV, and even presidential speeches (US presidents have been speaking into SM-57s for a many decades now).
- That means you don't really need to have an acoustically treated room and the clicks and clacks of your keyboard and mouse won't be picked so easily, which makes them great for home studios.
- While dynamics can get expensive, due to their construction they'll be less expensive than Condensers. The legendary industry-standard Shure SM58, for example, costs 100 bucks, and even the top models like the RE20 are way cheaper than the high end condensers that cost thousands of dollars.
- Dynamic can also be used for studio recordings - a lot of Rock vocals are recorded on Shure SM-58s because it's gritty; a ton of podcatst and radio studios use the Shure SM-7B (with Joe Rogan being the most famous example), NPR uses the Electro Voice RE27.
- Dynamics however are not as sensitive a as Condensers, they're not ideal for most musicians doing studio recordings unless we're talking rock/metal vocals.

Hope it'll be of use for all of you.
And sorry for double spaces but it's a lot of information and I wanted it to look organized.
Godspeed, anons!
And good luck!

>If you've already debuted, what balance has worked for you? Any pitfalls or traps?
I don't know how you'd define "working" but i've at least gained followers every stream on twitch and have been gaining followers daily on twitter (not quickly, but the number is going up). I don't think I'm doing anything that people couldn't figure out on their own; I interact with posts like png dumps (usually both dropping my design and replying to a design i like in the thread), I follow users around or slightly above my own following, I'll usually follow back most people that choose to follow me with very few exceptions, and I'll drop by streams of other indies whose designs or personality i find interesting, as well as the streams of those who drop into mine.
One thing that I've more or less avoided doing that I see a lot of others do is make posts talking about milestones and saying things like "oh wow I'm so close to x number!" which usually seems to bait people into following them. While I know it probably works it seems like a really blatantly greedy "give me followers" move. Giveaways are also kinda like that but at the very least you're giving something to people in exchange for attention. I've considered doing them before but everytime I've hit a potential milestone where I could it kinda feels wrong
I don't think either of those are problems though and if you really want to get more follows it probably works; I've seen people in the 1000s still making posts talking about their increasing follower counts.
Another thing I noticed is that some people pretty much get their followings by following a fuckton of people though I feel like this is something that gets more effective when you grow your following size. Some vtubers seem to really want to keep a low follower/following ratio while some just dont care. If they see that they got followed by someone with like 500-1000 followers when they only have like 100 or less, they're probably more inclined to follow back
This is kind of a mess but it's some things that I've observed while trying to grow my presence

I know I am not gonna make it this year, but that is okay. I am just using audition as a motivator to kick off my voice acting and vtuber hobby! I have a plan of action!
I am going to commission this very very very talented but under rated artist for a png avatar, and just stream with that until I have enough saved to get a full character sheet and rigger! She has never done a vtuber character sheet before, but I hope she would be willing to try it in the future. She really is talented and I want her work to be seen, so if I am successful I want her to be successful in equal parts. I will also practice my Japanese and Russian language skills! I need to get better at video and audio editing, right now I only know how to use Windows Movie Maker, OBS, and Audacity but I should learn Sony Vegas too! I also need a cool skill, and additionally need to get better at singing.
Someone like Mori is so remarkably talented, it kind of feels a little rude to apply knowing I'm lame.

Are there any good examples of male vtubers that aren't either fujobait bishonens, draw-girl-call-it-guys, shota traps or literally just guys that use completely female avatars? Someone with a genuinely masculine and adult aesthetic, the best I could find was Belmond and Kongou but I'm sure there are others out there. I'm experimenting with designs to try and make the male scene work without having to resort to harem themes that 99% never work or everyone else in the "female vtubers work so just make the male vtubers female" camp, so the more inspiration, indie or obscure preferred, the better.

Everyone hates their own voice at first because we hear ourselves through the vibrations of the soundwaves through our skull, and the proximity to the liquids in your ears makes you think your voice is deeper.
The dissonance between it and the recorded voice is significant. Start listening to your recorded voice and getting used to it.
If ultimately you won't thing you'll make it because of your voice, listen to Ironmouse squal and realize that people watch her despite that. If that's not enough, go look at some japanese babiniku with agressive voice changers that make their voice clearly artificil and people still watch them.

sounds like the system would work. if you have a steady stream of your "main" content, and then also regularly explore different subjects and see what your audience responds to. if it's good, try more of it, if it flops, recycle the idea and try something else, but maintain a steady stream of your core content.

Gonna need some advice here.
I'm starting to notice my voice doesn't match the character I'm trying to go with. The model I've already rigged is basically this image, but with Gin Dojima's face. Not that it matters, since it's covered by a mask, but I don't know how to draw, so I had to improvise a bit.
Also, sorry for the pases every now and then. I need a moment every now and then to gather my thoughts and another one to translate them in my mind.

I'll probably stream completely in spanish, but I can put subtitles on in case any weird gringo feels like watching a spic. I could also try to schedule some spanglish or english only streams, because I really want to train my pronounciation and listening skills.
Give me some feedback before I end up doing an Ame-debut-tier first stream.
Not like I can stream yet. I still need spare parts to fix my computer and due to corona-chan, I can't get any job in my small-ass town. Still, knowing is half the battle.

"Yes, but only if it occurs naturally." is the answer to 1, 2, and 3. Friendship comes organically. There's no reason to not be friends with a viewer, mod, or another vtuber as long as it happens in a normal way. Have you never had friends before?

To be honest, and I'm not trying to look like a shitter but i don't see anyone here ever being successful, the mindset I see in these /aud/ and /wvt/ threads are just so skewed and no one knows a single thing about people, just their weird narrowed view of the internet after growing up on 4chan.

Good rule of thumb: If they only hang out with you on stream and only talk about stream, they're probably clout chasers. Friendships are a two way street, "business relationships" are a whole different thing.

If you want a business relationship, pay mods.
If they're volunteers, then why not? Just make sure to tell them that depite your friendship you expect them to follow the rules and not being dicks. .
>Should you ever make friends with other vtubers or are they just there only because you're a vtuber and they want your numbers?
Listen, you'll make friends with people - if only because you have a common hobby and will naturally have what to talk with people who do the same.
Just keep in mind that if someone who never talked to you before approach you about collabs, or tries to rush some relationship into collabing you may want to take a moment or two to evaluate the situation.
>Is it viable just doing your own thing without making any connections to the 'community'?
There's no community, there are a bunch of cliques of people chasing after each other. The word community exists so established cliques can assert dominance over newcomers.
But yes, you have to just build your own community - it'll be slower, but you'll likely be freer to do your stuff if you don't worry about what others think.
Just keep in mind though, if your objective is to eventually pass an aution be prudent with your freedom and keep your content within what would be acceptable by normalfags.
>How do you spot people just using you for clout?
Look at their track record of collabs - do they interact with former collab partners? Do they badmouth former collab partners? Do they desperately try to get you to collab with them?

Is the book in the public domain or available under a permissible license (such as Creative Commons-BY)?
If yes, totally legal.
Project Gutember has loads of those:
And librivox has a load of audiobooks made from the source material in such books:

Is the book still under copyright protection (i.e. the author is alive or 50~70 years - depending on the jurisdiction -haven't passed since his or her death)? The answer is no, it's not legal.
You'd be violating 6 of the 8 minimum rights of the author granted by the Berne copyright convetion, of which pretty much the entire civilized world is part of.

Project Gutemberg is great and there's a lot of good stuff you could read.
Start by going over the "Search and Browse" and click "Most Downloaded", you'll find a lot of interesting stuff, such as War of the Worlds, Moby Dick, Alice in Wonderland, Dracula, Frankenstein, Gulliver Travels, etc.
All the original works of Robert E. Howard (Conan the barbarian) and Edgar Rice Burroughs (A princess of Mars/John Carter's Barsoom Saga/Tarzan) are in the public domain too.

Of course, there won't be anime light novels, but, if you get a following and don't mind going through the sewage that is amateur fiction in order to find something interesting, you could go to a place like Tapas, that has a bunch of weebs writing their anime-style light novels. It's 80% crap, but there's some decent stuff there and if you like something contact the author for permission.

Start editing clips/highlight videos. You may not like ever really like your voice but you'll eventually get used to it.
The real hell comes after it, when you get past your voice and start noticing your speech patterns and even worse is later when you notice all sorts of breathing, saliva, and lip smacking noises you never realized you actually did and get paranoid about them.
You'll try to desperately get rid of them with filters/noise supressors/gates, only to realize some time later that everyone does it and without them your speech sounds artificial and finally make peace with yourself.

So I've been seeing all these vsingers of all sizes cover different songs - how do they get the rights? With the current algorithm they have to be legit and at the same time I doubt it's through emails. Is there some copyright central they're using, or?

>> No.1001499

JASRAC (Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers) - one of the rights associations for music in Japan - has a list of works that it allows to be used and performed for Karaoke and Covers as long as you do your own mix of the instrumental (i.e. you don't use official instrumental versions for it).
To find what's the list - look up on their database (in Japanese) or just see what the popular youtubers are doing.
I also believe NexTone (the other major copyright agency) also has such agreement.
Keep in mind though those covers are not monetized, they do it for exposure.

There's none.
Japanes ones only gave a fuck because of Karaoke being well established part of the Japanese social life, as well pressure of the record labels so they wouldn't have to strike down videos and instead collect Ad revenue from them.
And ultimately it only exists in the current form because the agreement was initially made for NicoNico adn then extended to other publishers later.

The problem is that ith western music associations you're at their mercy.
They may just claim Ad Revenue today leave your Karaoke/Cover up (which is how so many cover channels exist) and eventurally strike you down years later - especially with the RIAA being the cunts they are.
You either buy a Cover license from the record label/rights management company, or you try your luck against the bastards and pray the youtube bots and the record labels leave you alone.

>> No.1002992

Unarchived streams ultimately don't protect you as Youtube has realtime Content ID. I've seen YT shut down streams due to copyright infrigement live.
It may be that you stream will only get tagged with Contend ID matches, and you take it down so they eventually don't become copyright strikes if the record label changes its mind later - so you're "safe".
If the record label has the setting on the Content ID to be more restrictive though, you may have your video taken down, get a copyright strike or have your channel taken down.

I understand that lighting is a part of making content but it was also kind of draining streaming in the bright room. It's not like how bright or dark the room you're in shows up on your stream in the first place. I've never looked at my actual face in the webcam so I can't tell you the picture quality (it's 1080 and I have no desire to see my face that HQ) but tracking is smoother and I think the other benefits of the camera help. I'm going for more of a chill/soothing vibe and not really interested in the lewdtuber thing.

I basically only set up follow list of some artists/game personalities/VTubers so far but I know that's too passive to get follows and interest. On my 'main' Twitter I'm a serious lurker who overthinks every time participating in an active thread/topic so I need to push myself to reply and get out there more on my fresh account. This is my biggest tip that a lot of people ignore because they want "muh perfect tailored OC". Get a character designer. A Japanese one, if you can. One thing I've noticed with a lot of western indie vtubers is that they have the shitties OC because artists had to go off of their crappy character idea instead of creating something, and they go with a normal artist and not someone specialized in character design. Artemis was carried all the way to debut and still is from his, a good design absolutely matters if you want a good strong start, it's the first thing anyone sees. A character designer in my opinion should purely be for the design, not the Live2D art. You'll need to communicate with some JPs if you use Skima but finding artists there and just locating their twitter works. I've found 3 or 4 willing to communicate me, our timelines just didn't match up since they had other clients. For English speaking artists though it's just a matter of checking sites like artstation or Twitter if you can navigate it.

My artist flow started with a cheap commission to flesh out a basic character design (It was a cheap one, like 50 bucks and I just gave them a bunch of different parts from characters I like or outfit pieces I thought were cool), then that went to a character designer who I had refine the design into something that doesn't look like "original character do not steal", but if you can either find an English speaking one or communicate with in JP either on your own or DeepL, you can get get a much better result than "hey i want my char to look like this" to an artist who just specializes in fanart or taking comms of characters who already exist.

Look for people specifically doing VTuber designs and don't bother trying to apply through that website. Just find their social media and mention you're using DeepL or whatever, then explain in super basic form that you'd like to commission a vtuber character design and they'll usually start out by telling you their availability. Just be sure to specify it's only for a character design and sheet.

The biggest roadblock I've run into for Live2D is time constraints but if you're capable of turning the design into something and waiting til later to get something better it's a great start. My design cost 300 and that seems to be the range for designs alone. I seriously had to go through hell to find someone who fit the style I like and who were open. If they decline just thank them and move on. Another tip for finding more people is going through people they follow because they tend to be artists doing similar work, it's how I found the person I commissioned.

Hair, face, top clothing, bottom clothing, shoes. Any accessories or whatnot. maybe a few characters whose style matches the look you're going for. After that let them know the "theme" you want (Samurai, Office Worker, Knight, Soldier, etc. things like that.) A few personality traits as well and you'll be good. I just put all those into one image and organized them as best as I could and have had good results so far.

When you get a result back, don't respond right away and just try and take in the design, get used to it for a couple hours then get back to them if you need any changes.

>Should you ever make friends with individual viewers you like?
It is inevitable to form a friendly relationship when interacting with people, unless you are sitting at 2k+ viewers, by which time you'll have enough experience to deal with it as they come (unless overnight success, but that's not something you have to worry about). Pic related - a vtuber who's liveviewers bounce between 700 and 2k. Just remember that they are not your anime nakama, but an audience that wishes to be entertain.
>Should you ever make friends with your mod team or keep a business relationship with them?
You must absolutely have a good relationship with your mod team. They can fuck you over in a massive way.
>Should you ever make friends with other vtubers or are they just there only because you're a vtuber and they want your numbers?
You shouldn't be an asocial asshole to begin with - people like bad boys, but assholes are hated. Again though, people won't be throwing themselves to collaborate with you, so its only natural to start building a network with that that do. Not to mention that if you and the other person hate eachother, it'd be a bad stream regardless.
>Is it viable just doing your own thing without making any connections to the 'community'?
Not if you stream regularly.
>How do you spot people just using you for clout?
That's not a problem you should concern yourself with at the moment.

Of course you can't stick solely to them, but there's so many games that there is bound to be a large selection for many Vtubers to choose from. You're also completely missing the point of the question. Do you find it more entertaining, funny, or enjoyable in any other way, if a Vtuber's game choice matches up with their design or character, or do you find them more enjoyable when they do not match up?

Depends on what works better for your case.

Pros
>Starting from square one with knowledge of past mistakes is much better
>New audience ready to discover a new channel
>Algorythms prefer new channels instead of old stagnating ones
Cons
>Autistic level of opsec is required
>If you fail a second time, that could hit harder
>Even with autistic opsec reps, by gaining in popularity you will eventually cross the path of people that are more autistic than you and they'll find who you were before.

Middle ground.
Make a new identity and don't intentionally/actively connect them, without lying or denying the connection.
You don't have to hardcore disavow your past to make a fresh start. Let people figure it out and just don't comment on it. Past is past.

How do you politely ask someone for a character design comm?

>Hello! I was wondering if you'd be interested in being commissioned to design a vtuber character! I am not looking for a full character sheet at the moment, but rather help in visualizing the concepts I have in mind. With you permission, I would also like to stream with a transparent png of the character to start off with. Would this project be of interest to you? And if you, what would be your price estimate? Thank you for your time!

Thanks for the feedback! Luckily the artist in question has comms open and is excellent at moe character design. I have one other thing I'm unsure about, is it considered rude to take the design someone created and go to someone else to get a character sheet for rigging, when the time comes? The artist I'm interested in seems to have not done that before.

Reading everyone else's effort here got me in the mood to tell my pointless journey.

I got into vtubers around a year ago and have been actively working towards becoming one. I started out as a NEET with no job because of the pandemic with only a smart phone and free internet from my neighbor. Flash forward a year later I have a job now and an average pc. I have character art from an artist friend and all I need to do is to rig it myself.

the problem is Im losing motivation fast. Working has left me exhausted and depressive. I don't dream as hard as I did when I was a NEET. But I feel obligated to keep going because of the time/money investment.

What do?

Just ask them. The artist doing my character design, I told them, here's a quote from the conversation:
>Side note/question, it may save us both time: Are you comfortable with your work being used as reference for another (Live2D) artist to create a Vtuber avatar, and potentially thus being monetized/commercialized? There is no "commercial use" line on your gig page, I'm guessing because of the category, and I don't want to have that be a secret sprung on you
>If I ever make it big - or heck, if I even debut in the first place - I would of course be very quick to credit and link to you and your pages
>If that is not something you are okay with, feel free to let me know. I just wanted to cover that now because that is the eventual purpose of this reference, it's not for a tabletop RPG campaign or something else personal
You don't want it to be a secret and end up with some drama like Melody had with her modeler. Get it all out in the open and ask the question, worst case is they let you know upfront they're not okay with that and you save your time and money. Fortunately, my first choice ended up being cool with it, but had to ask.

>> No.1033427

Oh and obviously (reference to "gig page") I did mine through fiverr, I imagine the conversation would be p much the same for any other platform. Just read carefully through any and every bit of small print on their advert/page/etc., you may see the answer already mentioned.

For reference, another contact I made figured out I was working on a chuuba model (made an account with "vtuber" in the name on fiverr, probably shouldn't have done that), but preemptively told me that he had a 25% upcharge for something he knew would be used for vtubing eventually. Just to give you an idea of what you might expect. The guy I went with was just like "nah I'm cool I'd appreciate the reference that's all I would want"
