For those who don't know, /co/ got spammed with threads on the pony show because people loved to avatarfag. The big pony fan site was run by someone who avatar fagged as a shit character. Threads would fill so fast they would need to make a new one within an hour, sometimes half an hour, and it would lead to 6 threads being created at the same time, causing the board to get flooded with pony knowing other shit off. /b/read adopted pony on /b/ because it was anti-/b/ to post cute things and the bread thread was full of bloggers who already made everyone seethe, so they picked up pony posting just to add fuel to the fire. /co/ got tired of pony so they started banning the threads leading to more pony spam on /b/ which lead to more rage which lead to people using it to shitpost on other boards in ways that would make Kiara anti-posting from a few months ago seem laughably small. Sitewide ban pushed a lot of people out to try and find a new place to shit up or discuss the show. Memes on the internet spread like wildfire and mlp got adapted as the troll's choice for pissing people off as well as the autists choice for goofy, colorful cartoon characters.

NGL when MLP kicked off I got into it. I just a little sick of being an angsty asshole and the colorful cartoon ponies looked cute. It had a similar appeal to anime since it was originally gonna be "Sailor Moon with Ponies" before Hasbro insisted it become slice of life. That said it still did, although less directly. A lot of big shitty twitumblr fandoms (DR, Undertale, SU, She-ra, etc.) link back to it. Undertale and any that branched off from it are obvious (Toby Fox mostly being known for being a composer for Homestuck before Undertale got big), DR and it's branches were one of the many fandoms that got big in that space because they happened to coincide with a homestuck break (in DR's case because an LP of it got popular at the time, pretty much directly leading to its localization.), etc.
You could see this happen in real time, back when it was running. All the Homestuck fanblogs would convert to the new fandom for a few months and then go back when it came back.

It's arguably all the same fandom "space" with how much they overlapped, although it's a bit of a Ship of Theseus situation with the actual people involved. Mostly, at least, some are still there.
