I don't understand a word of jap, I just leave them on the background for hours on end while I do stuff. Mainly Botan, but sometimes also Korone. I have no idea why, not longer than a year ago I would never imagine myself doing this.

What's funny is that I not only picked up a few words, but also sentence structure and even a little conjugation just from doing that. I could probably learn enough to understand spoken Japanese with not much effort, however I'm already studying 3 languages, so no chance.

Depends, it took me 2 months of Anki study to understand 90% of a gaming stream but that 10% I don't understand is in sentence long chunks where they're going off on a tangent or replying to chat. Zatsudans I can vaguely understand depending on the topic and whether I have context. I have had a few years of informal study aka watching subbed anime and chuubas to get used to the language and learn some common vocab though.

If the chat has a live translator then the chat has long been gone to the EOP menace. I usually stop watching a chuuba the moment she starts pandering.

Can we take a moment to talk about how bad most of live translations are?
Like, going radio silent for minutes when streamer starts using long sentences and popping back to translate some short easy phrase. Even with my N6-level understanding I can see translations missing out context or just being plain wrong quite often. It's even more obvious when you watch subbed clip with chat on screen and can compare subs with live translation.
They usually don't have time to put sentences together, and translations of short comments on current situation in game like "oh, it's this way" are useless after 30 seconds chat delay without additional commentary to provide context.

Yeah, live translations are terrible and often incorrect / biased. I am sure there are some good ones out there, but there are plenty of people who overestimate their abilities and think they can do it.
