cover/holo shit is trash. watch either vshojo or indies. lumituber is a great starter. nyanners, ironmouse, and apricot/froot are also great starters. pikamee is the best indie-ish vtuber imo. hololive stuff is just honestly too autistic; you probably won't like any of it aside from maybe haato/hachamaa. haato is the only genuinely good hololive vtuber

rather, pikamee is the best japanese indie-ish. she speaks english very well however and technically she's part of project VOMS but, really, at this point being anything that isn't hololive or nijisanji might as well be indie. it's fucked up that it's like that but it's just how it is; hololive is a blight vtubing given that it sucks up 90% of views despite being largely creatively irrelevant

just watch a bunch of translated clips from various vtubers and if one consistently interests you then that would probably be a good starting point. That's how I started.

If you don't actually speak Japanese none of the Japanese branch Holos will necessarily be enjoyable to watch. You can watch any of the ones people are suggesting but if the lack of understanding the language makes it unenjoyable, trying watching Hololive English. All 5 play games, Ina does drawing stuff and Calliope Mori and Gura rap/sing a lot.

Pikamee is the perfect starter vtuber, she speaks Japanese and English and swaps between them perfectly, is fun to watch, and also has a pretty simple design that won't distract from her content. Tsundaria is also a fun little group, they speak English as well and play with other smaller youtubers, but had passion and good sense of humor, also top-tier designs.
