/auds/ Thread # 12

Question of the Thread: Once you're up and running, what are you plans on fostering and growing your community? What tools or software will you use?

What is /auds/?
A thread where we discuss our vtuber aspirations! Where it's agency-based or independent, let's help each other grow and make it as entertainers. Indies are welcome to join, but shill responsibility. Share what knowledge, insights, what works/doesn't work for you.

FAQ:
Do I need an expensive rigged Live2D model to be a vtuber?
You do not! A simple .png avatar can be enough to get started.

Where can I learn how to Live2D rig avatars?
Brian Tsui of Iron Vertex has many tutorials available on his youtube channel

[Microphone Copy Pasta]

Here's a few tips for all of you about microphones for all of you:

First:
-If you are starting, take a look at what you have around, maybe your gaming headset will be good enough to start.
-If you have a rockband mic laying around stored in some box, it may do the job too, stick a pantyhose on top of it to stop plosives, cut a hole on a ceral box to have it serve as a mic stand and voi-lá. This used to be the beginner youtuber special back in 2011~2013 and it worked very well.
-Check the noise reduction filters and equalization in OBS (or maybe use NVIDIA RTX Voice if your card is compatible) for some boost in quality.
The important is to start.
-Study mic technique, a lot of quality improvement can be done without spending a cent:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ty8YLqOmbV4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAKnCEsZ_og

After you begin and you look into into buying a mic to improve your audio quality keep in mind a few things:
-"pro" audio requires a lot of investment in equipment, acoustic treatment, mixing, etc. A lot of your favorite vtubers and regular youtuber and streamers don't have it and do just fine.
-USB mics are generally not the top end of the microphones contrary to what Blue's marketing team may want you to believe, but a good quality one is more than serviceable. If you're not that tech inclined and want an all-in-one quick solution, consider one.
- A good XLR mic, a boom arm, a pop filer and good audio interface will be enough. Don't get lost chasing "the best", don't get lost into the audiophole rabbit hole, it'll cost you a lot of for increasingly diminishing returns that most of your
viewers and won't notice.
- If you are on a tight budget, look for dynamic microphones, a Shure SM-48 with a windscreen, an XLR-to-USB adapter or a cheap audio interface will be cheaper and beat in quality most USB mics at thrice the price.
-Take into consideration your needs - lot of streamers, for example just use condenser mics because it's "studio quality" but can't get the quality they may potentially output or do anything that will really benefit from having one (like raw music vocals to for mixing).
-Going off from the last point, if you are not recording music (I don't mean Karaoke streams with some reverb kicked in, I mean actually recording vocals for mixes or professional voice overs) consider dynamic mics instead of condensers like most big streamers do, it'll save you a lot of headaches.

About Mic types, there are basically two that matter for you.
Condenser mics:
- A lot of people who do livestreams use these; They are your Blue Yetis, AT2020s and similar.
-Usually are called studio mics, and there's a reason for that. While give you a nice voice recording with a fuller range of capture, to make the most out of them you need a controlled, studio environment.
-They are more expensive by themselves, often require more accessories (not only a boom arm, but shock mouths and the like), and are often overly sensitive (which is why you get a lot of mouse and keyboard noises when people are playing).
-To make them sound the best they can will require acoustic treatment of the room you record (because they are sensitive and capture the sound waves bouncing on hard surfaces and that messes with your quality) or home-made recording studio/booth (or a makeshift one, like getting inside of a closet full of clothes or recording inside a pillow for).

Dynamics mics:
-These are the stage mics, most of you will be familiar with handheld ones stick with the little ball on top of it (but many can have different shapes and look as "studio-like" as the Condensers).
-They're usually very good at not capturing the noise that's not immediately in front of them, which is why they're used for concerts, churches, TV, and even presidential speeches (US presidents have been speaking into SM-57s for a many decades now).
- That means you don't really need to have an acoustically treated room and the clicks and clacks of your keyboard and mouse won't be picked so easily, which makes them great for home studios.
- While dynamics can get expensive, due to their construction they'll be less expensive than Condensers. The legendary industry-standard Shure SM58, for example, costs 100 bucks, and even the top models like the RE20 are way cheaper than the high end condensers that cost thousands of dollars.
- Dynamic can also be used for studio recordings - a lot of Rock vocals are recorded on Shure SM-58s because it's gritty; a ton of podcatst and radio studios use the Shure SM-7B (with Joe Rogan being the most famous example), NPR uses the Electro Voice RE27.
- Dynamics however are not as sensitive a as Condensers, they're not ideal for most musicians doing studio recordings unless we're talking rock/metal vocals.

Hope it'll be of use for all of you.
And sorry for double spaces but it's a lot of information and I wanted it to look organized.
Godspeed, anons!
And good luck!

how are you going to audition if you don't have any sort of portfolio or experience as an indie?
i assume that a lot of people wanting to audition also want to develop content in some way first
back when the holoEN auds started there were people asking stuff about that too but i think its slowed down for now

>>907058
Most auditions these days require you to have content creation chops and entertaining an audience - some specifically saying that they want streaming experience. And even in auditions that don't require it you'll be against people who do have such skills on top of their talents and habilities.
That's something you'd know if you looked up auditions and read what they're looking for.
Doing indie content creation is a way to build up the necessary skills and have some sort of portfolio you can show with your application instead of showing up with empty hands.

No idea if this has been shared yet:
Don't take your sweet time to audition. You may think you have a lot of time before the deadline to finish your application but in reality most spots are already taken long before the auditions close.
Nijisanji had a short audition period of only two weeks and those who applied late got 0 views for their audition video while those who applied earlier got at least some views. It has been rumored that some got contacted even before the auditions closed.
Do you think they will just wait for the auditions to close before they start looking at the applications? If you want to get noticed be early!

I don't know if anyone remembers this, but I read it a few months ago and can't find the source.
It basically stated something alone the lines of "having lots of subscribers doesn't matter because there are talented people who don't have the marketing skills or the necessary luck, we can handle that, what we are looking for is talent".
It was either an interview or article, or maybe an audition list of "stuff we are looking for", but I know for sure that involved a big agency.
I'm reminded of it because sometimes people focus a bit too much on numbers - it's okay to care if you want to have streaming as a fallback if your audience plans don't work, but if your objective is to build a portfolio for an audience, worry about honing your talents/skills and entertaining an audience - incidentally chances are also that the viewers will come if you have quality.

A bunch of youtube channels that offer royalty-free music too such as NoCopyrightSounds, and there's also a ton of websites. A good idea may also be buying a collection of royalty free songs, they're not really expensive and because you're paying the music selection tends to be better.
Just keep in mind that you must be aware of the licenses they're put under regardless of source - some, for example Audio Library Plus, will freely allow you to use stuff if you are indie, but not if you are working with a company; others may require a commercial license if you are making more than X-ammount a year from your content.
Also if you're using creative commons, stay away from anything that's not CC-0 (Public Domain) or CC-BY (Attribution), as videos may break non-commercial clauses (if you run ads and accept donations), non-derivative clauses (matching audio to video) and share-alike clauses (if you don't also release your content for re-use).

Non-commercial use means that you don't technically own the artwork, and you're just paying to effectively rent it.

I wouldn't look to JP VTubers to emulate. The male debuff isn't as strong there as it is in the west because their viewership demographic is a lot bigger and varied. Most people watching vtubers in the west are literally watching them because they're vtubers. While not always the case obviously, I find artists who charge for commercial use usually have much higher quality work or are more professional to work with, they're much more serious. I've done a lot of looking into JP Live2D artists as well and usually you're paying for commercial use anyway as an extra fee, sometimes it's included as their only way of commissioning them.

Of course there's artists who either don't care, are less experienced in transactions that are earning someone else money, or who don't even know the laws about that kind of thing who all are willing to just make you art and as long as you don't stick it on a t-shirt to sell you're free to make literally TENS of thousands of dollars if not more off of their work; the person who did zen, silvervale, etc's models didn't add any type of commercial use/royalties til recently which im sure theyre kicking themselves over.

There's a lot more professional artiststhat do want their piece of the pie either in royalties if you're already very, very big and just becoming a vtuber (like if Pokimane had made a full swap) or commercial fees and under most circumstances I agree they're entitled to some kind of commercial fee because it isn't really a standard "i just want art" commission, it's a business expense that you'll be using to potentially make a lot of money.

but i mean most of the time you're paying it its just part of the full live2D fee

Hit up Skima or something and find a good JP artist, I've found a few willing to work over translation services, but scheduling for the bigger ones is a bit harder because they book months in advance though a few here and there are still open, just have a character sheet ready so there's as little room for error as possible, though a lot have character design included as an option

I had a fairly simple sift system.

I compiled a list of people I wanted to contact, split into marked for freelance and not marked for freelance groups.
For the freelance group, I sent a form letter just asking them for a price quote with a very general outline of the kind of work I wanted done, then I waited 2 weeks. Anyone who didn't respond in 2 weeks went on my permanent blacklist for unprofessionalism.
As responses came in over the 2wk period, I responded to each individually. I went from a list of ~30 names whose work I liked, roughly ranked in order of how much I liked it for my purposes. By the end I had 6 respondents whose rough quotes were within the realm of reason, who were interested in the project, and who were available to do it.
Ultimately I ended up getting my #1 choice, who is a rather popular artist and who produced a fantastic design for me.

Oh, as for the group not marked as open for freelance, I sent them messages anyway--but rather than pitching the project outright, I just asked if they're open to freelance work. This is mostly futile, but it's a "miss 100% of the shots you don't take" kind of thing. Out of another ~30ish names, 2 of them were willing to talk about the project and neither was ultimately a good fit.
No blacklisting for non-response there, though, since not being listed as open to freelance... can't really blame them if they don't check their email often, since they're probably not expecting emails.

Not a complicated process, really. Just making lists, sending form letters and sifting down the list until you have a small core of good fits you can discuss/haggle with individually.

Also, this is fucking ESSENTIAL advice: Your MAIN JOB as an employer of a freelancer is to make the process as painless as possible for them. Be ready to clearly state your needs, wants, and any points you're flexible on. If you aren't sure on some point or detail, defer to the artist--you should be hiring one whose style you like and trust anyway.

If you are easy to work with, the freelancers you hire will be happy to do more work for you in the future, and often will give you better future prices and work harder for you, because they know you won't be a fucking drag.

Also, don't be afraid to throw in a spicy tip or be a baller, either--it isn't wasted money to be Mr. Rich, even if you're kinda faking it. People like a generous employer, and they tell their friends. It's an investment in the future of your working relationship, which is easily worth an extra hundred, two hundred bucks thrown on their Twitch subs or tip jar. Freelancers are your employees, so be "the cool boss" and not "the dickhead boss"

Godspeed, anon.

You block people for unprofessionalism, yet also talk about "spicy tips", which are just as unprofessional in any work environment outside of being a waiter or delivery boy.
From my times commissioning simple fanart I vividly remember most artists being quite opposed to being treated with tips, because it's their honest work and they don't want handouts and pats for being figurative "good boys", they also compile their prices so that no tips would be required. vtubers are kind of a "fun weird thing" to people who don't already know about them. I've found that artists who need the concept explained to them definitely like the idea, even if it isn't their cup of tea specifically.

Also yeah, if my chuuba project works well, I'll definitely be returning to the same artists over and over. I went for a certain design sense and distinctive style, so I have no reason not to keep going back to them and paying them rates commensurate with the scale of the project as it grows.

While you don't have to have a super-rigid format, it definitely helps if you have like once-or-twice-weekly scheduled streams that you will continue playing X in particular. It might not feel as free as just going "eh fuck it I'll play whatever", but being able to give potential dedicated viewers some semblance of expectation in what you're gonna do serves a purpose. Don't have to have literally everything you do scheduled out carefully a month in advance, but having dedicated "Friday Minecraft" nights or something specific gives an added feel of "I know what my chuuba will be doing X day, at least, if nothing else" that can strengthen a returning audience.

thank you, I'll definitely try that
I'm stuck with a shitty vroid avatar (which I've changed enough most people don't think its vroid until I tell them) and a laptop that hardly works so I'm in a rough spot for streaming

Advertising on r/virtualyoutubers isn't going to get you very far, since most people don't bother to wade through all the garbage, low effort clips and introductions people flood the feed with and just look at whatever is getting voted high. Your game choices also seem pretty generic (minecraft) or non-conventional ('Random' RPG's and Melee) and don't tie together in any way, so people are likely to naturally gloss over you in favour of more specialised Vtubers
>Vroid avatar
You may say it's hard to recognise, but people avoid vroids pretty heavily so it might not be as changed as you think it is. I'd recommend getting that shit swapped out pronto, but you also have a shitty laptop so that takes priority even more...Do you at least have a good audio setup? Like an actually good one and not "good enough" audio setup? Do you have any plans for what you actually want to do with streaming? Any keyfabe you're trying to uphold?

>> No.929315

Yeah, no worries man. I just have noticed that the more successful streamers (let alone chuubas) that I've noticed tend to have some sense of familiarity in their streams, so that if nothing else you know they will at least play that one game.
It also helps you, the streamer, to have at least one or two known streams a week, so that way you aren't wracking your brain in indecision trying to figure out what to do next. You have a fallback of "well, even if I can't pick something/get something to work, in a couple days I'll have my normal X stream, I'll just remark that I'm having trouble making up my mind" and where applicable/if you have any semblance of a dedicated viewerbase, you can maybe get some audience engagement, i.e. "I really can't decide between starting Y and Z, you guys got any preferences?"

Streaming is a grind and it'll take some time to build an audience, I've known people who have streamed for a month before they got one regular in chat, so you'll now have to build yourself a bit.
It seems that you're advertising for people who either are deep into the japanese vtuber hole or aren't not interested in other EN vtubers unless it's themselves or someone they can benefit from.
If you're not afraid of being associated with 4chan, /wvt/ may be a place to start, they may laugh at you but one or two people may and stick around.

>attempting networking with other smaller streamers
If you have no viewers, you won't get far. They want to have benefit, even if it's crosspolinating their 5 followers with your 4.

Also, consider the following:
-Are you putting your VODs on youtube?
-Are you Clipping good moments/making highlight compilations?
-Are you using these funny/interesting clips to shill yourself?
-Are you shilling yourself in the hellhole that is twitters?
-Do you have schedule?
-Are you waiting someone to pop up in chat to talk to you or are you conducting yourself as if you already have viewers? (if the former, do the latter).
-Are you actively engaging viewers on other streamer's chats and social networks?

One idea is to stick with one thing for a while - let's say you want to play the original Doom. Then play Doom from beggining to end and then move into Doom II or Wolfenstein - you may pigeonhole yourself into a niche, initially but that's not bad and when you branch out some of the audience may carry over. Or have a set of games that you keep on rotation on a fixed schedule that people may come to expect with regularity.
But more importantly, keep at it.

>I want to build a small audience of people who share interests with me and/or to make friends
In all honesty, it sounds like you'd be more fit to be a VRchat streamer than a Vtuber desu.

Either way it sounds like you're fucked in multiple aspects until you get some money. Maybe try using twitter to platform yourself so others can potentially see you? Using the vtuber tags can go a long way, as evidence enough by a majority of the anons here always recommending it and discovering indies via the tag in the western indie general.
>>929586
Of course people are going to avoid you for one reason or another, dipshit, but if the vtuber anon hasn't had a single fucking viewer stop by to check him out, and the only thing that he'd probably be using to advertise himself is those free-to-use, generic looking vroid avatars in a reddit thread filled to the brim with them, then that might be a major reason why people aren't noticing him. Most Vroid tubers that have a following of some sorts got in early and have the personality to retain the viewers despite the crappy avatar, or built a following before migrating to a Vroid avatar. With no unique design or visuals distinct enough from the thousands of other people, of course it's going to fucking matter.

In an industry where the main appeal is being a visually unique and interesting anime character, why would it NOT matter?

He said he had no activity in chat - people may as well have checked him, lurked for a bit and thought he was boring and left, the avatar in such cases may not have been a consideration at all.
Of course the Avatar has appeal, but that's not the make or break for anything, otherwise, Kano would have gotten no attention at all with her scuffled avatar.
Again, it doesn't matter as much as you think.
> reddit
People on reddit couldn't care less about western vtubers unless they're Ironmouse or Melody-tier big.
There's some png vtuber japanese babiniku who says he wants to speak english but his content is as low effort as it gets and he'll make front page of r/virtualyoutuebers on a slow-day on the Niji/Holo front - half-decent japanese indies just get there by posting a mangled google-translated introduction.
Meanwhile there are good western vtubers with nice avatars who will be lucky to make the bottom of the front page on a good day, and all it takes for it to happen is getting 10 upvotes yet they won't now that the japanese learned they can link dump there and thirsty weebs will just upvote after seeing the word "Japanese".

Good thing that it can be worked on.
If I may help with a tip: smile. Your brain can't differentiate between a fake and a real smile and makes you feel a little more upbeat - and that comes out in your voice. Even if you're not the hype kind of person, that may make the difference between being boring and being chill/comfy.
Also, always imagine you have a friend you're talking to, don't view it as public speaking but rather having a conversation with someone sitting across the table - you have to keep your voice at a volume that they can listen.

No but I intend to prioritize traditional style youtube with a vtuber model as my avatar rather than the traditional setup, so I was worried that advertising myself as a vtuber for now would alienate people.
Should I do it anyway? Regardless I'm not going to until my art is done at least

unless you're making content that is tagged for people to be interested enough to click follow you'll probably need to follow more people to get more followers if you want to reach out to more people. as much as i hate to say it, at the very least starting out thats how you'll get eyes on you if you don't have something to show off
>>942973
yeah if you want to see the follower number go up you'll probably need to at least start following smaller vtubers or content creators making similar content
i'm almost at 200 followers by just following vtubers that are around my following size and through this way you'll have more people to interact with. even though there's a lot of overlap in the vtuber community, if you both have 100 followers but only have 50 people that you mutually follow, you're still getting more eyes on your content if you interact with them

So do you think I should start advertising myself as a vtuber now even though my art isn't ready?
Full transparency, I'm doing a star wars channel with a Mandalorian-esque model. I always intended to appeal to the vtuber crowed to a certain extent, but prioritize the star wars youtubing community since there isn't an overwhelming amount of overlap and was worried that going too far in the anime-esque vtuber direction will turn off what I want more core audience to be

follow vtubers if you want, but don't expect anything from them. other vtubers aren't the audience you should be aiming for anyway, since they'll have their own streams and own stuff. you should be looking to advertise yourself to people you actually want to be part of your audience.

>> No.943493

>>943373
If the case is that you don't have anything at all ready then yeah I would probably wait until you have something to show off, especially since you're not trying to cater to just the vtuber audience; i wouldn't expect followers until you have something to show off, even if its your character art.
I've never tried shilling towards a specific fandom so i'm not sure how you'd go about that; maybe make posts involving star wars related hashtags or something?

In order to avoid being one of those "Debut: TBA" people, when is the best time to actually start a twitter account?

I've got a friend artist working on a concept art of my character, and I was planning to just stream with that as an image at first until I can figure out how to do rigging myself.

My character will be a nonhuman type though, so hopefully that will make things easier.

>> No.947740

Do you think dubbing Saya no Uta would reflect applicants poorly?

>> No.947774

I wanted to avoid being a debut TBA and waited until i got my live2D and then debuted like two days later
the first few streams were very empty but after a week i started getting viewers more consistently
if i could have done anything differently, it would have been to spend at least a week or two more building up my debut
pngtubing is more than fine; if you want to start streaming as your character it would probably be a good idea to start once you get your art.
i'd even ask your artist to make an open and closed mouth version of your art for reactive pngs

>don't be TBA vtuber just make content
>all these TBA vtubers seem to do a lot better building hype and networking

Starting out, being a part of a community is a lot smarter than just waiting and debuting and not doing anything. Twitter matters early on in your career, it's how you meet people.

I won't lie; there does tend to be a lot of overlap but like i said earlier,
>if you both have 100 followers but only have 50 people that you mutually follow, you're still getting more eyes on your content if you interact with them
Even then, the vtuber community does seem to be supportive of each other at the very least; we can't be streaming 24/7 so when off stream a lot of them tend to stop by each others chats
making friends and collabing with them also gives you the chance to get exposure for your channel

>> No.950741

>>950169
Exactly this. Being a streamer is 50% content and 50% marketing. There's no point in making content if no one's gonna see it and streaming to 0-1 viewers for hours on end is incredibly demoralizing. I've been there. People say to just make content and people will come, but that requires a lot of luck and most people never make it past the 0 viewer rut.
Making a Twitter, marketing yourself, and connecting with other creators is not a bad thing, no matter what the autists with no social skills on here try to tell you. It's how you get your first 100 followers, your first few loyal viewers, then from that point it becomes infinitely easier to grow.
Just don't get inflated expectations about your Twitter follower count or lose sight of actually making content, because only a tiny fraction of your Twitter follows will actually convert into viewers. It's still better than nothing though.

>> No.951132

>>950741
Yeah this is also an important thing to consider when starting from 0; despite almost being at 200 followers on twitter, about 25 of them have actually followed me on twitch, and i can say that I have maybe 3-5 who have regularly visited my streams
But that's still better than nothing and it really does feel good when people come to talk with you
