I mean, when Okayu joined back in 2019 there's no way they expected to earn more than a living wage at best from this. There's a reason hololive contracts were intended to be part-time. Growth before that for hololive wasn't especially impressive, and her channel was at less than 100K subs for 9 months even with all the cross-channel subbing. So she had to have been motivated by something other than money. It's not that out there to say a large part of the reason they joined up was for the parasocial aspect of it.

Why did I write this letter to you? Do you know??
I know that you're always watching my streams!
I don't usually remember, so it's strange.
I only remember you! Amazing!
I'm looking forward to you coming to my streams.
Right now I hope this letter reaches you quickly and you can enjoy reading it.
Forgive me for thinking like this.
I'm an idol? I'm everyone's but you're a bit special.
So I'm thinking selfish things like be only mine. It's your fault.
My secret thought. I love you.

I won't say they were doing it for practically nothing, but Okayu's superchats for her first eight months come out at a total of 63K. After YT and Cover cuts, that means that for 8 months she took home around 22K, working out to a salary of 2.7K a month before taxes. Which may sound sort of acceptable, but remember that Cover doesn't actually pay for shit so part of that is business expenses as well. After factoring in stream assets, audio hardware, PC hardware, etc - a generously low estimate of 5K - you're looking at 2k/month for a volatile "job" that's useless on a resume, and which you have no idea how long it will last for or how fast you'll be forgotten.
And remember, this is Japan. If you didn't find a good job as a young person during the season of 'shuushoku katsudou' (the job hunting period) you were basically fucked. Okayu's 'career' would have been seen as a ridiculously stupid risk that would have come to nothing if not for the confluence of factors that catapulted hololive to success.

35% or 50% are thrown around, based on that Coco stream, but they mean the same thing, one is just using 100% as the baseline and the other is after factoring in Youtube's cut.
We have a good idea of how many members she had last December from the people who scraped member chats. Honestly the amount from members, while steady, is pretty low for JPs. Imagine being one of the top vtubers and only getting 4K as your 'salary'.
How many members do you think she really got during that first year? Honestly I can't see her having more than 300 members during that time period, which would work out to 525 USD a month. Making it somewhat more decent but still in fresh grad level pay.
Either way, it says something for the viability (or lack of) of the occupation if you need to be one of the top fifty or so in your field to earn almost the same amount as a junior software engineer in SV.
