Most vtuber companies don't start as companies, they're just VR fan/hobbyists that decided to get together to monetize the medium they're active on. Early on there were some shit talents and shit companies but I think they all imploded over the years. Also depends where the company is from. In JP they put more emphasis on management and organizational structure than the talent themselves, i.e. the brand is bigger than any single employee. It's part of why previously upd8 couldn't understand why fans were upset at the whole Kizuna clone stuff. EN is way more into the talent being it's own brand and telling the company to fuck off. ID and IN companies seems to take the worst aspects of both and smash them together, like take all the money and run away leaving the talent high and dry to take on the brunt of fan backlash. You see shady shit in any new monetized industry, just takes a while for the fake rrats. Usually the least shady win out in the long run until their shady practices that weren't fixed grow so much it implodes the company from within. i.e. Activision Blizzard. So I think the super shady ones are probably mostly gone or moved onto other stuff where their reps aren't shit yet and the ones that aren't knew are mostly just incompetent.

People will say upd8, but upd8 wasn't a company. It was a poorly managed support platform for VTubers and mostly failed to uphold their end of the deal for all the VTubers that signed up for the platform.

Black companies are basically sweatshops for an industrialized country. The whole occupation of online streaming from home doesn't really lend itself to the evolution of black companies. You'd have to be talking about a company that makes you sign on to stream like 10 hours a day 6 days a week then takes like 75% of your earnings and holds the price of your model over your head under threat of a contract breach suit. A good example of what would be an internet-based sweatshop type company are the old Chinese World of Warcraft gold farms. Where you have people work in a big center monotonously doing one activity for 10-12 hours a day for very little compensation.

In short, there's a lot of ways for vtuber companies to be "bad" but it's almost impossible for them to be actual black companies.

My memories a bit hazy but I think there was something about bad management and money issues. Pretty sure that was her manager, not upd8. Nobuhime said a lot of things in one of her final member streams about her manager and the treatment she got under them.

This is just one of those things that got lost in translation. upd8 wasn't a VTuber agency, nor was its job to manage the talents that joined it. The whole reason Activ8 created upd8 was to provide its resources to other VTubers in exchange for a cut of any money they made. Mainly upd8 was to promote any VTubers that joined its network and be a middleman to connect VTubers to others in the entertainment industry.

My rrat is that she owned the rights to the character and assets as a stipulation to signing with them at the very beginning. I think she already had the character idea and sketches on her own. Back then, she had no idea if PPP and Tsunderia were legit or not, so it's not unreasonable to think she had some perks in her contract that were better than normal. Azuma Lim's production company which was a subsidiary of CyGames. When Azulim became popular, they decided to expand into a virtual idol group and forced Azulim to start doing singing and dancing practice despite that not being part of her original job. Azulim couldn't keep up because she had health problems (which even viewers could notice, as she would get exhausted very quickly in her livestreams.) She eventually broke down and complained about the situation on Twitter, which led to her being suspended. She eventually managed to get the rights to the Azulim avatar back with help from a lawyer.
There was also speculation that the staff may have been physically abusive since she would randomly fall down as if being pushed in streams and videos, but that's not confirmed.
