Dead air is a holdover concept from the days of radio where there is basically no content if there's no audio. In a visual medium there's no need to enforce constant audio, especially dialogue. That's one of the big draws of watching live, that there is a sense of spontaneity to the community where someone will say or do something and the stream suddenly goes off onto an unpredicted tangent. People want to feel a part of that as it happens, as opposed to merely experiencing it later through VoD. It's that sense of tribalism that people want to play into and that can sometimes be seperate from the streamer themselves.

As much as people like to say a streamer is a reflection of their audience, sometimes good streamers have bad audiences and the opposite can also be true.
