This is the correct answer. She had no streaming nor content creation experience when she applied for EN1, so she was passed over. Debuted as an indie after to get that experience, and applied & was accepted into NijiEN before EN2 auditions opened. Calli has had to fight tooth and nail to collab with the Indies she bowed she wanted to as early as her debut, and Kiara has expressed multiple times about how hard she gets fucked over by management when it's clear she has an interest with V-Tubers outside the company.

Even HoloJP, who appear to be more lax, actually used to leech off of Nijisanji a shitload and have distanced themselves farther and farther as they 'need them less' now. They're just a very isolated company. HoloEN management is fucking horrible. HoloMyth was lightning in a bottle and management got too haughty and thought they're better than everyone. It's not surprising if both EN1 and ID have misgivings towards the HoloEN management. If Ollie's membership stream has anything to go by, she tries really hard to shake off the ID debuff while Reine accepts their fate and Anya just doesn't give a fuck. I mean, I myself am very suspicious of Omega and a bit disappointed that HoloEN started hiring "professional vtubers" instead of undiscovered diamonds in the rough from various fields, the same disappointment I had with NijisanjiEN* or the "rewarding success with success" method.

Another issue I see is usually, just from human coping mechanisms, when an indie is indie (or small company/group) doing her thing she is naturally going to have that "I'm a strong girl I don't need some corporate baloney like Holo controlling my creativity anyway!! it's better like this!!" etc.

Hololive viewership skews everyone's sense of scale. In the western indiesphere, there's a huge powergap between 100-200 vtubers and 1000-6000 ones (vshojo). 3 digits mean you're already relatively successful. I know Pomu is often talked about despite her size relative to the next viewership range. On the big ones right now are Sariel and Lumi(1000-2000), and these ones will never go corporate unless they get to bring their baggage with them. The next on the range is 100-300 vtubers like Leaflit and Nina. Koopa and Rose sometimes rise to 200 but not often and settle around the 80-140 range. Below them are basically 2views ranging from 2-60.

The western sphere just doesn't watch vtubers. Japanese indies can go as high as 1000 despite the obvious giants like Nijisanji and Holive, and this is on youtube with their bugs and all.

I don't think any NijiEN fans were worried about HoloEN2 stealing their viewership. Most NijiEN viewers watch them specifically because they operate totally differently from Hololive. You can't just fix that by getting new talents when they have the same restrictions and expectations.
Personally I watched HoloEN2's debuts since nobody in Nijisanji was streaming but haven't really watched them after that. Nobody really got my attention except Baelz and I can tell she already feels like she's being stifled by Hololive's restrictions.

I bet Mori regrets joining Hololive over Nijisanji too but I guess she couldn't have since they didn't have an EN branch at that point. Nijisanji would actually give her marketing to promote her music like when they bought Youtube Ads for Diamond City Lights and Black Out. It's optimistic. The fact of the matter is that the likes of Niji and especially Holo have totally monopolised the western market before it's indie scene had a chance to grow.

What you're more likely to see is many failing start-up companies, company poaching, and people who were rejected from bigger companies due to lack of experience debuting as Indies with the sole intent of creating an audience that'll look good on their portfolio for future auditions. Breakout hits like Nova, Mint, Miki, and Lemonleaf already followed this kind of approach. People are always rightfully chasing higher and higher goals and the Indie scene is simply too weak for complete newbies to come in and feasibly help build a community.

Even fucking Lyrica has probably realised that she can only grow from where she is under a company banner. The biggest Indies right now are all famous artists or mamas of Nijisanji/Hololive members etc.

You're really overestimating Hololive's income considering how little support they get. It's pretty much guaranteed that Kuzuha makes more money than Pekora because of Nijisanji's business model. They don't only get merch once or twice a year, they shit out voice packs and merch and real life events pretty much constantly to give their talents cultural staying-power. That's not saying Hololive don't generally make more income but the company just has much smaller infrastructure so they're overly reliant on superchats and memberships to make money. While that's pretty stable the conventional wisdom is to diversify your income sources instead of putting all your eggs in the Youtube basket as Susan will fuck you over for no reason and kill your income like they did to Suisei for an entire month over an algorithm false positive.

What Mori probably regrets isn't so much the income but that Hololive has done nothing to legitimize her as a musical artist.
