Way to miss the point of DS1. Demon's Souls and DS1 were not Furi or Shadow of the Colossus. The challenge was the level itself, putting you in a situation where even a single grunt can be dangerous since factors in the environment were stacked against you. Look at Sen's Fortress, Blighttown, Catacombs, and the Anor Londo Archers. All the difficulty was environmental instead of a very large knight who spins with swords out. O&S WAS an outlier but then they changed the entire design ethos around the outlier leading to what should have been a different series altogether.

I liked 2 more because I felt it had great replayability, lots of weapon types and builds to try out. NG+ and the ascetic system made farming more fun even if some of the drops were next to impossible. laying down my sign to fight for the Looking Glass Knight or invading people with double poison broken thief swords for the 10 extra poise damage to stunlock havels was the most online fun i had in a souls game until pontiff knight fight clubs came along in 3

I appreciate DS2 because it “missing the point” of what made DS1 good, I believe inspired DS3’s narrative exploring the consequences of continuing a cycle far beyond its intended purpose when it should have ended long ago with the DLC rejecting the cynicism of the main game’s story in a way that I think makes it one of the best games of all time.

I believe Slave Knight Gael’s quest is a mirror to the player character, and a metaphor for how we’ve exhausted everything the world had to offer in pursuit of the “Dark Soul”. However because we did this, continued the world beyond its natural end seeking more, it gave the “painter” paint to make new worlds. Spring-boarding off the success of Dark Souls, Fromsoft had newfound freedom it didn’t before, and was able to make two new stories and worlds in Sekiro and Elden Ring, and gave Armored Core another chance on a greater stage exploring a whole different part of the universe.

Options and variety are a large part of what makes a single player game fun to me. In Elden Ring or Bloodborne, I can dodge, I can parry, I can facetank into a combo with the right heavy armor/poise.
