It also won't mean that the company will be less successful, but rather they will probably make more money for a good while. 2 issues here;
1) Valve had steam way before any of EA store or other online shit, they also had a lot of good will and are something of a monopoly on digital games at this point. It's not about them being private, it's about them being early and dominating a market.
2) Steam is the worst thing to ever happen to Valve. Now they don't make games because they can just live off steam money, so people just keep hoping for new games or sequels to games that will never fucking happen.
3) Steam is one of the worst things to happen to videogames. You own nothing, DMCA bullshit keeps removing music from games retroactively, now you can't even pjhysically own games as they just require you to use steam to download shit anyway. It was a huge loss for consumers. Even the selling point of cheaper games was utter bullshit as digital still cost the same as physical when physical was actually an option.
