The reason male Vtubers don't work while female Vtubers do is because the males have extremely tough competition on all sides while females don't. Streaming wise there are hundreds if not thousands of more entertaining males streamers to watch who aren't massive fags which eliminates most of the potential male audience, and the western female idol viewership was already taken by K-pop idols a few years before Vtubers started gaining popularity. Meanwhile the female streaming scene is relatively weak and mostly consist of women showing off their bodies for views, and female Vtubers don't really have to compete against K-pop or anything similar for the male audience.
