evo was a fun weekend here, I was watching ren from vspo stream basically all of the pools myself. The IDS finals took place during I believe kof top 8 or something and it was alright. My opinion is that long combos that are guaranteed if you don’t drop your inputs are really unengaging and unfun. If my only counterplay is to not get hit by the starter and once I’m stuck in it there’s no escape, it makes me want to quit out. At least give me some 50-50 escape options to mindgame, then extending the combo is impressive because you beat me both technically and mentally.

Long combos are exactly what people think of when they say "fighting games are hard", and I wouldn't be surprised if it discouraged many more players from trying a game than it encouraged them. That said, long combos can be cool, but with the condition they're not just looping 3-4 moves for 10 seconds. IDS is a pretty big offender of this, as are most anime fighters.

i hate them as much as i hate the long ass super animations in sf6. if i have no agency and i have to basically just sit there for 30 to 60 seconds in a 90 second max round, i want to quit. even watching long botan combos as a spectator gets boring
strive isnt perfect, but the combos arent long. and the other person has the options of burst and YRC. so the attacker has to hedge their bets on burst baiting, YRC baiting etc. its way more engaing imo

The game purpose is to refill the drive bar, and
you are supposed to use that time to think about strats anon. If you are bored try to recall the last interactions you had in neutral so you can keep track of patterns
On the other hand super large combos are no good because you cant really ever stop paying attention cause he might drop
Also always be a dick and wait 5 secs for rematch and use that time to remember what the other guy did last round start and counter it
