Once that become the most popular stream everyone started doing it. A lot has changed in a couple years for them.

Literally none of the "gamers" turned out to actually be gamers really besides Okayu being a speedrunner, which was fucking hardly even utilized. Mio.. doesn't really play games much at all as it turned out, etc. Aqua's better than basically the entire mini-gen combined at most things, Suisei's better at Tetris than everyone else in Cover etc.

The only really called it that just to copy Nijisanji at the time, because they had just put out their 'gamer' gen and Cover was very smol back then and leeched on Niji all it could.

Hololive from the early days were more focused to do idol-related stuff like singing, fan-talking zatsudan, oji-san orgies, etc.
Fubuki bring Mio to the group via connection, then later add Okayu. Okayu propose the idea to add Korone, which make them the only genmates. call it nepotism all you want, but they are indeed capable for the job.
they formed a "group" called Gamers, since they were more leaning to streaming games compared to other holos at that times.
but then the management decide they should do idol-related stuff too. Okayu almost quitting for this (she hate her voice back then, and doesn't like the idea of being an idol), but Fubuki able to ensure her.
now every holos almost stream games, and gamers do idol stuff too. so they aren't really that different
