Majority of people in this board are ESLs and many of them speak at least one more foreign language, besides English. I speak my native tongue, English, German and I might learn something new soon. Japanese isn't that interesting, nor does it offer enough (aside from "durrr I watch animu without subs) to justify learning it.

6 months since I got into chuubas, 6 months of casual Duolingo. Progress is abysmal. I can introduce myself, ask the time, and ask for food, and that's about it. On a related subject, why do so many JP vtubers use English words like:

>jump(u)
etc. Even ones who don't really speak english seem to pepper their dialog with these. Do schools there not bother to teach them the Japanese words for these or something? Does it just make more sense in the context of gaming to use the English words?

An imperial fuckload of legitimate words in Japanese are almost exactly words in English that they just borrowed. There are most certainly synonyms for those words in Japanese they just happen to use those. I don't know for sure if this is the case but a lot of words in Japanese are really flexible as to what they mean. The English borrowed word might be more specific for the Japanese equivalent.
