The biggest reason that Hololive and Nijisanji are big today is because they have a dedicated legion of clippers who crop the most interesting and frenetic portions of their streams, and thus they don't need to expend the effort of creating their own highlights. Indie's don't have that boon, and they most erroneously rely on the precarious chance that someone in their fanbase might clip whatever interesting interaction happens on their stream. When someone watches a Hololive stream, there's an inherent sureness that something funny or enjoyable will occur - a promise, if you will - but, for indies, that 'promise' isn't there, and any potential viewer must rely on hour-long VODs to ascertain whether or not an indie is even worth watching. What happens when a potential viewer hops on an indie's stream but during a period of downtime and low content? They're going to immediately exit. Time is precious, and attention spans and tolerance will be low for streams that don't immediately grasp their interest. Clips are important because they're short, bite-sized peepholes into a certain streamer (and thus extremely low investment and light on your time) and you can immediately determine whether or not they're to your liking. Indies shouldn't be lazy and rely on the off-chance that some fan will clip them; they need to take the initiative and start creating their own highlights to ensure better viewer retention.

This doesn't just apply to clips. Pre-made content such as skits or shorts are good as well - anything that can instantly decide for a potential viewer whether or not you're worth watching is good enough. Just streaming isn't sufficient and won't get you anywhere.

I know, but I wanted to explain the mechanics behind it. It's not necessarily clips that foster growth, but getting your viewers to immediately determine whether they should continue watching. Clips are perfect, but other things can work as well.

>How to get big as an indie VTuber
Score a collab with Hololive, that's it. How, you ask? The easiest way is probably to have the same mama as them and use that as an excuse for a collab, or maybe you're the mama yourself.

I've seen plenty who make their own clips or do skits beside their streaming. Didn't help their numbers at all.

Tl;dr - Have experience, resources and something to differentiate from the crowd, a talent or a quirk that will make people interested with you.

Most indie vtubers "fail" (definition of fail depends on their expectations, really) because they are inexperienced people starting content creation with little to no resources put into it and with no plan besides "i'll play some Apex Legends and Minecraft".

kek, nufags tend to forget that holos were struggling with numbers until they went viral. just be funny and consistent, or be talented at something and you'll eventually have your own fans that clip for you.

Twitch, and now youtube has a clip function. Just cultivate your viewers to clip more often.

No, it's because Holos and Nijis are exceptionally talented and corporate backing gives them the kind of promotion that indies can only dream of. Legions of clippers are a result of their popularity, not the cause of it. So in summary, OP, you're wrong and gay.

>and something to differentiate from the crowd

Go watch 6 random indies in the 50-100 range and tell me what makes them differentiate from the crowd. It's literally nothing. There's a hundred "comfy" girls, 100 girls with a nice voice who loves singing, 100 lewd joke girls, 100 loveable weirdo girls, it's all the same thing the only thing that sets most of them apart is the people who find them and get attached to them.

Corporate branding. It legitimizes chubas and naturally raises their profile. Indies need starting capital or their own corporate sugar daddy to compete.

What will eventually happen to VTubers is what happened to regular tubers. Eventually people get bored of gameplay when more niche channels with better, more specialized content crop up. Speedrunners, chuubas who talk about horror stories or the news, vsauce-likes, drama channels, you name it.

As far as indies go and just regular streamers in general, the popular ones hire editors/clippers to go through their content and select the more clippable moments. That's part of how Randon grew so well. He's got a lot of great clippable moments despite following fairly cookie cutter methods of content creation and has an editor that handles that for him that he's had from basically the start. A lot of smart indie chuubas do it themselves and it's no coincidence they're the ones doing the best.

Shibuharu already talked about this and more. He's pretty big as an indie so you can say it worked for him.
