Yeah, there used to be quite a few. You had doujin fighters, Arcsys was juggling Blazblue, Persona, GG, Examu was more active, you could technically count Marvel I suppose. Nowadays almost everyone wants to be grounded. The funniest, but saddest part to me is how Persona 4 Arena was supposed to be the pinnacle of Arcsys trying to appeal to casuals, the dumbed down fighter with shit like comeback mechanics, auto-combos, one button DPs and all motions being easy, but somehow it ended up being more unique and way more of a sweatfest than something like Strive.

So rolling 2000s I buy dracula judgment. Kusoge sure, fun against cpu. Maybe fight against my cousin, all good. Its not popular? who gives a fuck. E-sport? what is that? A joke?
Soon you will be saying shit like wii sports should be in the olympics lol.

Nowdays dracula judgment gets released and it becomes a "discord fighter " and soon enough you fight no one to play with. Its also a 10 year commitment to the devs because they have to "balance" the game with regular "patches" and they have to create a "competitive scene".

Its simply not worth it to create new fighting games if no one is going to buy them because no one is going to buy them

It has that sort of amateur feel, but at the same time it has the release cycle of these professional games. But to be fair that's more on the changing tides of technology, even the modern Touhou fighters got a console release, a Steam release and a (very shitty) online mode that doesn't require exchanging IP addresses. I guess I'm more bothered because one of the defining aspects of anime fighters is their speed. Strive matches can end quickly because damage is high, but the game feels so much slower. Fighterz is also technically still alive but that's a clusterfuck and I'm sick of the idea that the only way to make a fighting game feel that fast is making it a team game.
