looked up a bit about the valheim gem upgrades
>red gem adds damage scaling the lower your health is
>green and blue gems add a proc to trigger an extra effect
but the real kicker seems to be that it LOWERS the weapon's base damage, meaning that it doesn't even seem that the gem upgrade is all that desirable all of the time. like you wouldn't want the red gem on a ranged weapon or the procs on a slow weapon.

Some people are saying the crystal battleaxe is also pretty good in Ashlnads too because of the spirit damage, and silver arrows for archers instead of frost arrows.

(:. '-') one of the best ways is to just jump right in on a project and start learning as you come across each obstacle. for most people a tutorial will only get you so far unless you have some kind of photographic memory. learning the basics like which terms mean what, and the different types of languages is a good starting point. then a lil research into the other projects that people have done so you can decide on a language to use. if you're just trying to do scripts i would recommend python. its really popular so you can find alot of info and its high level language so its easier to understand.

I learned the very basics in college, but they were only really the very very basics. Khan Academy is a decent place to get free courses on it and covers essentially all you'd get from an intro class. Beyond that I've been self-taught on the job. Programming is a lot like solving puzzles, and sometimes my job feels like spending the whole day trying to solve puzzles. It's a lot of
>I don't know how to do [specific thing]
>Time to google how to do it and try stuff until it works

You probably need that [specific thing] though. It's less useful to try to learn how to program generally than it is to try to learn how to do some small specific task using some specific programming language. Even in the professional world we focus a lot on trying to take big complicated projects and break them down into small tasks.

coding is fun or at least engaging in the same way building anything is. there's a challenge to solve and you get rewarded for your efforts.
the important part I think is just to decide on something you actually want to create and start building it, googling answers along the way. Maybe I'm projecting but I guess most people who start some "how to" course get bored and give up because it's not fun creating things you don't care about.

Something less professionally useful, but potentially more fun, would be checking out some of the programming or hacking games they have these days. I've seen https://store.steampowered.com/app/370360/TIS100/ floating around that might be indresting to stream? The downside is that you wouldn't learn a "real" programming language playing that, but you'd learn some concepts probably that would be applicable to real languages.

>>78252917
>>78253091
I think this more or less comes out naturally as you gain experience and start to seek out patterns or play with ways to reduce code bloat. Something I'm generally against is the mindset that all things must be fully modular and common and shareable from the start. Every project I've worked on where this was a starting goal ended up wasting massive amounts of time on the modular aspect without actually getting any benefit from it at all, and all of the effort into making code common and re-usable and shareable was moot because only that project ever used any of it.

Don't get me wrong, there's absolutely a time and place for making common libraries, but I think focusing on it too much leads to wasted time at best and fundamental design damage at worst.

Speaking of languages, I want to second and third the people saying
>Python
>JavaScript

Both of these are very useful and very easy to use for either little scripts or large programs. RenPy uses python, Discord is actually an HTML+JavaScript website bundled into a desktop application, a ton of AI/ML uses python because that's where a lot of the math libraries are, basically all web stuff is JavaScript. Once you've actually gotten some experience with programming though the specific language matters less and less. It's like you play Boltgun and learn how to play it, and then you play Doom Eternal, and they're not the same game, but they're similar FPS, and knowing one makes it easier to get into the other.

The correct way to start programming (not web design) is either Visual Basic or a console application on C#. And HTML and CSS for web design. Python and javascript are stuff you learn waaay later down the road when you know what the fuck you are doing because these are support languages/tools. This is like trying to learn Calculus when you don't even know basic math. And also have to learn Database if you want your website to have any function and store values. Learning Visual Basic will help a lot with absolutely everything that has anything to do with coding or computers in general and even introduces you to more complex stuff like object-oriented programming. But first you must learn how to display anything on a fucking screen!!

I'm going to fourth this. In my opinion these are really good introductory languages because they don't let the user get bogged down on the small stuff. JavaScript is my favorite for this. You forgot a semicolon? No problem. You used a variable before you declared it? Don't worry, we've got hoisting.
The only thing I would stipulate would be to use Intellij or some other IDE so that you get error highlighting. It's better to immediately know there's a problem with your code than to have to look through logs.

Yeah this one kills me at work. I've got a guy who exclusively uses vi for all of his work, with no extensions or plugins or syntax highlighting at all. I get that there are hardcore people who like that, but I constantly receive basic config files from him that have syntax errors for basic stuff like commas, quotes, and whitespace (where it's significant like python/yaml files).

>>78255285
Don't get too hung up on the definition of "programming". There are some people who were trained on very narrow definitions and to them a programmer is not compatible with a coder, who is not compatible with a hacker, who is not compatible with a web designer, who is not compatible with a software engineer.

I believe Kiki is mostly seeking
>an introduction to some scripts for fun

Rather than, say, become a database administrator.

What is she going to actually make with visual basic? Learning HTML + CSS + JavaScript seems like the most direct route to creating something useful that she can show off like an official website with some little toy game or audio player.
Yeah I'm sure the idea is to start with Visual Basic and then move on to languages people actually use but how many people keep up with that outside a curriculum?

HTML and CSS go hand-in-hand. Think of HTML as the scaffolding (where things go, what things say), and CSS as the styling (how things look, what color they are, etc).

>>78258461
I wouldn't stress JavaScript too much at the start though. HTML+CSS has a lot to learn on its own, and you can do a lot of things with it long before you need to introduce scripting with JS. Not to say it isn't useful, but I wouldn't say it's your step 1 priority.

CSS and HTML are best learned in tandem, but you'd want to focus on html first. CSS just moves stuff around a web page, but html is the framework for the web page. A lot of stuff builds off of html so getting familiar with that first makes a lot of sense.
