A loud crack, a snapping slide, a hole in paper, a flinching fox, that's how it begins. A glint of light reflecting off expended, arcing brass. A wafting of gunsmoke tickling your nose, the addictive scent of burned powder. The sun shines brightly down on you on this perfect summer day, a breeze comforting you. It's just the two of you here. A green field, a dirt berm, a stand with a paper target, your love, your everything, here with you. It's everything you could ever want. "Easy, Kana," you say soothingly, your hands on her small shoulders protectively. She trembles a bit, her bushy tail slapping you nervously. "It's okay." You feel her small shoulders start to relax.

You've brought Kana to the range today, her initial resistance finally overcome by persistence on your part. Now that she's living alone, you want her to be able to protect herself when you aren't around. With her limited experience, you promised to start slow with her. She stands before you, wireless earpro nestled into curious, inquisitive fox ears. With the slide of her .22 pistol locked back, she places it gingerly on the bench and looks over her shoulder at you, her long ponytail waving. She wears a black tank and khaki cargo pants. She sports tinted shooting glasses. You think it really suits her. She looks radiant in the bright sunshine.

"Good job, stinky," you say, moving up to her side and picking up the pistol. You load a few more of the diminutive rounds into the magazine and insert it. You hold it up, pointing the barrel downrange, prompting her to take it. She does, bringing it to a rest position like you showed her. You again move behind her. "Don't be afraid, just relax," you say. She nods, keeping her attention downrange. She engages the slide release and it snaps forward, a cartridge entering the chamber. You reach around her, practically enveloping her small body. You guide her hands, extending her arms out in front of herself. "Like this, Kana, remember this feeling," you prompt, close to her, leaning into her. You smell sweet shampoo. You help move her hands and fingers into the proper grip. "That's it." She nods. "Don't think about the bang. Just pull straight back." She nods again. "I want you to shoot five times. Take your time. Focus on your sights," you instruct. She nods. She's excellent at following instructions and it makes you smile. You remove your hands from hers but stay close to her. "Whenever you're ready," you prompt. She does not acknowledge you, she only focuses.

She lines up her sights, leaning into it. A silhouette stands perhaps three yards away. She squeezes, applying constant pressure. With a POP, her tiny hands jerk as the slide's momentum drives the handgun back into the meaty part (love you Kana lol) and slightly upwards. A small hole appears in the target's center of mass. She maintains control just like you taught her. She reaquires and fires. Again and again and again. The slide locks back. She ensures her weapon is safe and places it on the bench. She turns to you, a look of expectation on her face. She's so cute you just want to eat her up. You decide to tease her a bit. "Hmm.." you say, sternly.

You walk out toward the target. She actually did very well. She picks up new things so quickly. You see five holes in the center of mass, more than enough to do the job. At this rate you'll have her shooting 9mm in no time. You rip down the target and walk back to her, making a show of it. "You're pretty brave to walk in front of me when I have a gun," she says smugly, showing her canines. "So?" she asks, her golden eyes looking up at you, seemingly eager for her results.

She holds out the paper so that you can take a picture of her with her target on your phone.

Suddenly you hear ten shots ring out in quick succession. Ten quick strikes on steel echo across the range. You both turn to the noise, shocked. You were sure you were alone only moments before. Nearby you see a figure clad in a military uniform, a greatcoat draped over slender shoulders. The figure holds out a C96 in one hand, its barrel smoking. It slips the Mauser into a shiny leather holster and turns to you. It walks smartly towards you, brown ears flopping under a service cap. As it approaches, the figure tips its cap up so that their face is visible.

“Kept you waiting dayo,” a familiar face says smugly, appraising the two of you. Her eyes narrow mischievously, a big grin on her face.

“PURIN!” Kana yells, overwhelmed with emotion. She begins to run toward her friend, her floofy tail streaming in the wind.

“KANA!” Purin replies, running, her doggy ears bouncing happily.

The two collide and embrace, spinning in each other’s arms, laughing and crying. Two old friends, reunited at last. You smile. Today, all is well in the world.
