They were seen as a positive in the pre-Luxiem days as it made the branch seem closer and more natural. I remember even Hololive started doing more impromptu collabs as a response. Hell, Ethyria wasn't even really hated back then, besides Nina at the time, so it wasn't that bad. Post-Luxiem it worked against them, though, since if you didn't want to see the boys, sometimes you didn't have a choice. You couldn't even pretend they didn't exist and ignore any streams advertised as collabs with them, because sometimes they'd just show up anyway.

This is entirely anecdotal but I know at least two vtubers who did it entirely out of financial need. /vt/'s very own Denpafish pretty much was forced into streaming as a last resort after losing her job and being unable to find a new one.
Also minimum wage jobs don't really go as far as they used to. If you want to actually survive you need to either be working 2-3 jobs or have supplemental income like vtubing. It's entirely plausible that Niji's income from things like voice packs and memberships is good enough as a side-job to avoid working at McDonalds or Walmart. It's not fair to act like a vtuber should just pick up a job at Walmart instead of streaming for Nijisanji, because one of those things is a "hobby" even though they're both just a job.
If you want proof of this look at how Pomu was able to quit her wagie job purely from vtuber income and it made her life significantly happier as a result and allowed her to channel her time and energy into projects for vtubing.
