Honestly, I'm not sure if there's really a secret formula for making good horror games. The entire genre is extremely subjective and something that many would find great can come off as trite in a few years (see yesterday's watch a long for a good example)
I guess its one of the greatest tests of a game designer's skills to make a horror game that can stand the test of time.

I think the game's two big problems are:
>1. as everyone else is saying, it being able to register normal talking as screaming makes it way cheaper than it should be (which could be a difficult problem to fix, idk i know fuck all about coding)
>2. people are going into it expecting scares which could kill the scare/shock factor for them right out the gate, plus there's only so much it can throw at you even with procedural generation

It's just they don't understand Amnesia isn't scary because "spooky thing runs after you", there's lots of visual and audio design and mechanical balancing involved to make it scary in a good way.

Yeah, that is the problem. Dark Descent was very atmospheric and it was just exploring a castle. It does seem like Dark Descent was lightning in the bottle. Also a lot games these days have a gimmick to show off.

There are some things but ultimately it's very subjective. You could name a few things: a good horror isn't reliant on jumpscares(like this game) or shock value of things on screen(what was that game a few years back, Agony? That's a good example) but rather the oppressive atmosphere and more existential terror, like not knowing if you can trust your own memory or what you see. >>77180583 has a very good example. A good horror game also ties gameplay into said atmosphere rather than keeping it separate. Be it managing your light sources in Amnesia or generally surviving with lacking resources in older SH games. A good horror also tries to make you feel less in control. This is why a lot of horrors started taking guns away. Also maintaining the atmosphere goes both ways: make it too hard and people get frustrated and numb, make it too easy and it's basically a walking simulator or a proper shooter rather than a horror.

Simple, you have to build up to a jump scare with tension. You can't just jump scare the player with no build up otherwise they get used to it. FNAF1 does a great job at building tension, so does Silent Hill.

I can only remember one or two jump scares in all of SH1 but they were super effective and memorable.

People complained about Ashley's design because they wanted to coom, Ashley could be a gray cube and RE4 would still be amazing at what it does. The difference here being Resident Evil was always kind of "Evil Dead 2" while Silent Hill was intentionally kind of "Jacob's Ladder" and people have particular things they want from each kind of horror movie. I say as somebody that had the original RE4 as their game of the decade, nobody has ever taken the RE story seriously, its an action movie with horror elements and some goofy moments but for RE4 the gameplay was so on-point the entire industry were copying it for years afterward. Team Silent weren't that worried about gameplay like Capcom was with RE, they were more concerned about nailing the atmosphere, which includes music, graphic design, story, and characters.
