I'll share my story in detail, because I think it's noteworthy how I wound up /here/. Apologies for the length, I am a certified writefag.

I was a lifelong weeb and vocaboomer well before getting into vtubers. I was aware of them since basically the beginning (and even had friends ask me what they were, because they assumed that vtubers were similar to vocaloid in some way.) So, I knew what they were, but the content never really appealed to me. I never got into the culture of livestreams and let's plays, I was not really someone who watched youtube much at all, and I only knew that twitch was "where everyone moved when livestream started charging money", if that tells you how old and out of the loop I was. I knew of Kizuna Ai and I had seen the design of a certain blue girl, and that was about the extent of my knowledge. I thought all vtubers were Japanese-language-speaking idol-types reading prepared content to an audience in short skit-type segments. To summarize: I was completely uninvolved not just in vtuber culture, but in streamer/youtube culture entirely, as well as in the idol and kpop scene. I live under a rock, essentially.

However, I am in a lot of disparate little communities scattered around the tattered remains of the old web, and so are some of my longtime companions. A friend of mine was in a pseudo-bbs when Luxiem debuted and was first exposed to english-language vtubers from there. Friend thought "hm. That's interesting," and started to watch them. After a little while, when they had been thoroughly hooked, they showed them to me.

It took about a month. I have a friend who is far removed from the sphere of weebshit who watched, perplexed, as I slowly went from "this man- yes, he's an anime, it's called a vtuber- thought fried rice was literally fried uncooked rice" to "I don't know why I am watching this anime man play a game, no one's making me," to "no, I will not stop calling that anime man my wife." I distinctly remember when I first followed a vtuber, and then about two days later I had followed all of EN and half of JP. I didn't have a youtube account prior to doing this. Why would I? Oshi mark? Akasupa? Pog? Ligma? Zatsudan?? It was a whirlwind of new shit to learn.

I was dragged, kicking and screaming, into vtuber hell about two months before Noctyx debuted -- and much as I care for Luxiem, it was Noctyx that really locked me in the vtuber basement. Deja Vu was the moment I realized that this was something special, I think. I was captivated by it, from Uki himself to his wonderful singing, the beautiful video, Fuuchan's wonderful narration at the beginning -- it all spoke to me. Seeing older content creators from... different walks of life come into this strange new realm of media was an eye-opener for just how powerfully transformative vtubing can be. Inhabiting a beautiful piece of artwork so that your talents and your true self may shine... I think there's something beautiful in that which is lost along the way for many people. It doesn't matter how someone looks, it matters who they are on the inside... at its best, vtubing gives people a space to showcase their soul and all of its strengths, and I think that's really something remarkable.

On that night, I changed. And because misery loves company, I dragged the people I love into this hyperfixation with me... all these years later and we're all still here.

On that note, I see a lot of talk in spaces about how "there are better streamers to watch," as though people /here/ have literally never seen anything but Nijisanji. I can say that, for me, I have not been sedentary in my engagement with vtubers. I watch everyone, everywhere, constantly. I watch EN. I watch Stars. I watch other corpos, and I watch indies. Some of my long-time friends are vtubers now, and I watch them, I watch the friends they've made, I've seen how lovely and interconnected communities can be (and how messy it can get if things go awry.) I have watched things change, and grow, for better and for worse, I've seen the boom and now I'm watching the bust. I am not a sycophant blind to the greater world of vtubing beyond the borders of youtube dot com -- and as a Yuguy, I can add that Anycolor are not exactly in my good books, to put it mildly, and they haven't been for a long time.

No, why I remain here is simple. At the end of the day, I'm just tuning in to watch the content creators I enjoy. It really is that simple. I was drawn into this because of how unhinged and amusing the boys are, and I stay because everyone remains unhinged and amusing -- and more talented than ever before. And that goes for everyone, everywhere... not just Nijisanji. Life is too short to put energy into the things you hate, and it's far more rewarding to focus on the things that bring you joy.

Most of my friend group isnt into vtubers or as weeb as i am so i get asked this a lot, so i wanna see what yall say

why do you watch vtubers and what makes it any different than watching a normal streamer?

Would you still watch them if they didnt use a vtuber model?

I usually tell people i like niji because of the "friend group" aspect of it and vtubers in general because they tend to put more effort into their content than the average streamer. in terms of not simply flipping a stream on and playing a game at least. making music and having group events for examples. I also like how most vtubers post and operate by a schedule, because i am someone who loves things to be scheduled and/or regular.

I like to think i would still watch my oshis if they didnt use anime boy models but i probably would have never found them if they didnt...

I’m definitely more on the “anime is real” side, I love my oshi’s kayfabe and storytelling. I wouldn’t have found him if he was a fleshie but I probably would enjoy his gaming and chatting content still. I agree with the effort and structure points as well. I really like ryoma so it’s not just about kayfabe and lore for me, but I think it’s 2x funnier that this 173cm anime swordsman talks about how much he loves fashion and how much he mods his car. I do get pretentious on here sometimes about vtubing as an art form but it’s not a hard requirement for me. It’s good enough for me that high effort content exists at all and is being actively pursued.

i don't think i'm into streams. if it weren't for the vtuber format and model, i probably would've gone my entire life without watching a stream to completion. i love my oshi more than anything but my oshi is his personality just as much as his lore, his model, his interactions with the other livers, and even the restrictions that being in a corpo entails. he's changed a lot since joining nijien, in ways he wouldn't have without this environment, he would fundamentally be a different person if he weren't a vtuber.

yeah i think after watching the vtubers i cant go back to normal streams. I used to just always have open a live stream for just background noise and didnt really care what they were doing but now i find myself caring so much about being able to watch every moment of the boys streams.

i think another thing i like about vtubers is a lot of them dont stream for really extended periods constantly and i actually get time to catch up.

I am not naturally drawn to streamed content. Watching people in the flesh play things solo is not really entertaining, for me. I watch vods on rare occasion, clips are easier to digest, but overall I did not watch youtube or streamers on the regular before vtubers.

I think will continue to support the livers near and dear to my heart regardless of where they end up, but I don't really watch twitch or bili2, so I can't say that for certain. What I can say for certain is that I never would have found their content if they hadn't gone the anime route! Like another anon said, the selling point of "anime is real" is definitely a factor. It's just fun to see anime people doing things and discussing their passions, at the end of the day.

Inarguably, what draws me to Nijisanji is the community aspect, the sense of camaraderie and the fluidity of collaboration appeals to me. One of the reasons I previously avoided vtuber content was because of how rigidly controlled interactions appeared to be. I like "hopcons" and collabs, I like how everyone is everywhere all at once. I am also drawn to the diversity and breadth of content which they showcase, particularly musical endeavors. I admire the work and skill that goes into the actual artistry of vtubing, too! There's so much to love.

Vtubing feels magical to me, which sounds super dorky but it's true. I got into vtubing... by becoming a vtuber! Then I became a fan of indies and friendies and Vshojo girlies, then Luxiem hit and I was all in. I never got into a boy band, I'm not a k-poppie, but I am not better than them because those five boys hit my heart like a whirlwind. And then I fell for more of NijiEN, and that love just kept branching out to more vtubers until I became a fan of the medium, period. Vtubing tends to be more of a show, an active effort to entertain than regular gaming streams which I do watch, still.

I may not have stumbled into a stream of theirs ever if vtubing didn't exist, which would be a shame. I'd still watch them now even if they went fleshie, but I probably wouldn't be so enamored. The anime is like, permission to love them because of that veil of fiction between us.

surprisingly, i watched facecam streamers fully first before vtubers. i got introduced it via ironmouse because i was a fan of corpse husband (still am) and i love how seemingly fun and authentic these people are when they present themselves via a model and i think the effort they present seemed so cool and entertaining to me project wise. then, my friend kept livetweeting about luxiem and i was a bit interested, then corpse being the buzzing social bridge that he is, constantly collabs with niji en and vtubers in general and theyre always so much fun that i ended up enjoying vtubers in the long run and i think there was something really special on how vtubers carry so much on their streams with a more authentic personality, thus making me be more engaged than when i used to watch facecam streamers more back then .

the closest thing to streams that i used to dabble in were the let's plays of old. at one point the youtuber i watched started uploading unedited vods and i would skip those because i wasn't interested in them.

i also really like the schedules and knowing what games to expect. and zatsus, themed or otherwise. i could never get into twitch, i hate the layout and the chat there.

I watch normal streams once in a while but not... game streams. I've watched Lawful Masses do court case breakdowns in real time, but generally for gaming content I watched edited VODs. I never got into twitch and I still only really use it to support friends of mine, I find the layout annoying and the culture... it's too fast, if that makes sense? It's shiny and fast and loud and I'm old and tired. When I found Nijisanji, it felt a bit like going back to the past, everyone was so authentic and rambled at length, the collabs felt like old times when youtubers didn't minmax their social circles for clout but instead just interacted for the fun of it. And everyone was so talented and so interesting and (frequently) so goddamn weird, that I was utterly charmed by it all. I get what other anons mean when they say vtubing is like magic. It really is, to me. The models are so pretty, so expressive, they're living anime people reacting in real time live and interacting with an audience, that's so special to me. It is escapism, isn't it? To tune into this and see something so unlike the rest of the world we live in... for a few hours every day I get some peace and quiet (no matter how much they yap!) from everything else in the world. It's really wonderful.
