The fact that most of their singing is done in karaoke streams with little or no voice editing only makes their singing seem better when you remember that every single song you hear nowadays on Spotify has so much editing to it that if you found the singer irl and asked them to sing it for you live it would probably sound like shit. Let the affection you hold for a vtuber make you not pay attention to the lack of professional-tier technique.

The REAL reason why vtuber songs suck (and they do) is because the vtubers or whoever they hire are complete dogshit at composing. You could get anybody in the world to sing it for them and it would still be a terrible song. But this is a general problem of the music industry since at least the 80's when Pop became hegemonic.

I feel this way about Gura's stuff, her karaoke is generally great and her releases have been mediocre to bad. For whatever reason Hololive has pigeonholed itself into flavorless anisong bullshit. It doesn't even have to be different genres, there's a lot of jpop/doujin/vocaloid that's pretty good. But like you say, they're hiring mediocrity.

Rikka has the most technical training and skill in addition to his ability to actually compose good music but Izuru has serious chops and a very unique raspy voice that gives him a lot character. Astel is actually the weakest (looking at level of vocal polish and skill) singer of the three but his range is extremely wide. They all carry notes really well in any case.

I thought Gura's first original was just ok. I hate that it got overhyped just cause she's just very popular. The genre of it never really came off to me as something she would sing either. Is it a good song? Sure. Will I listen to it again? Not really.
