Today it was just labbing. This is my first time going into a character without guides already out so its pretty exciting to discover new things by yourself.
Spending some time practicing a combination just to find something better later, and with the knowledge better stuff still will be found out by someone else might feel Sisyphean but its actually pretty fun and it really helps you understand why frame data is actually important.

One thing however is that I have yet to fight my first real fight with him. Unlike last time, I don't want to develop weird habits that will be hard to correct later like last time with Juri when I was just mashing the autocombo for so long I never quite was able to stop myself from doing it even after I learned real ones. WT Akuma points out battles without the fear of death leads to being carelessness, and if you make carelessness a habit when the real thing comes on you will die, which is why he no longer joins tournaments.
This time I will embrace the Satsui no Hado, and consider every match I have to be a battle to the death.

Today I mostly practiced anti airs. Over reliance in modern DP means I dont know how to anti air with normals, which wasnt really important with juri but akuma can pull some sick combos out of it easily so might be worth learning

Besides that, watching tech appear on twitter is rather mystical: the entire world seems to be labbing him trying to find new things to do, which also means I spend more time reading stuff than actually playing, which I am not entirely sure if its a good idea.

I can just say this: doing a combo just discovered yourself is so pleasurable it might be distracting me from practing the better combos. Humans are inherintly narcissistic and we like best the things we made ourself, which explains why parent love their children or takos love their art pieces.

Initial DI works the same, you get about 15 degrees of influence either way. But in Rivals, because they don't have shields or whatever (and are silly goofballs), in order to make defense more powerful, you can influence your aerial vector horizontally *after* you get launched. So you can DI an 90 degree move left, and then *hold* left to drift, you can slide right out of the range of a lot of followups. Rivals players swear by this but it feels really bad and wrong, and if they wanted to add more defense, this is a very unintuitive way to do it, and one that actively punishes you for doing what you know against someone who's used to it. Glad rivals 2 got rid of it.

Technically both survivability and combo escape. You can DI out and drift even further out of someone’s follow ups. Its utility varies by character though. It hard punishes bad DI by forcing you further in the wrong direction. By their logic, with shields you get hit less often so you don’t need it. But like, if you get hit in rivals 2, you’d be in the same position as rivals 1. The reasoning for the change doesn’t make any sense.
Also I just realized characters kinda feel like blocks in rivals 1 and sound like them too. Not a very nice feel, especially for stage collision. At least the hits are sometimes crunchy

I think they could have made the characters feel less chunky if they were animated better. Everything is just too rigid for it’s own good. There’s also a distinct lack of sinking into the ground before landing that allows platform fighters a sense of fluidity in their landing.

While I wouldn't say I'm a pro, one issue I'd say is that neutral can be overwhelming depending on matchup, and almost anyone can snowball into death. So if your neutral isn't very good against another character, the matchup feels almost hopeless. It's like you either get a relatively even matchup that can be explosive, or this one sided domination. There's no bad matchups that are just normally bad, the bad matchups are fucking awful, and the only reason you have a chance is because everyone can explode on offense.

Today I had a bit of a mental breakthrough. In chess, you practice apertures, you should already know all the possibilities until mid game. Similarly, instead of practicing a combo over and over, you should also practice the entire sequence post oki until you do 100% damage.
Every combo ends with your enemy in the ground. On the ground he can mash, reverse, grab, block, super or jump typically you can can cover about half the options by either grabbing, shimming or meating, so you need three routes for every oki you make
It takes typically 3 interactions to kill, so in the end you have 3x3= 9 things you should practice in every combo to guarantee a game win from start to victory in absolute brainless mode, basically, its writing a bot to do every move who will do a perfect 1/9 times but in your head.

Im not sure if my idea is clear so I will give an example of what I did today.
Today goal was to practice a particular combo, lets call it "combo 1". Instead of doing it over and over again, I just simulated an entire match from start to finish.
A common opener against Juri when fighting Guile for example, is that he counters your OD projectile with his own OD projectile. So, if you think the guy has Juri related trauma, you throw a DI to counter his own projectile round start, like Nephew does here:

So, in my hypothetical round, I do the first move: DI. Next, I do the combo I want practice. It ends up in oki, but turns out if the enemy roll backs it ends up at perfect distance and frames for a dash+5hp meaty. I combo1 off that and when its done he is on the floor and in the corner. .Now I can reach him perfectly with a drive rush + combo1 starter creating a meaty setup, and end that one with a level 3 which guarantees a kill.
I practiced the combo 3 times and also practiced and an entire set from start to finish, it's a win win of multitasking. Once I feel confident enough, I will practice the same setup except I will put a shimmy somewhere, and then practice the punish from there. By the time am done with the 3x3 I would had practiced every possibility so I don't need to think a single time from start to finish as long as I guess correctly every time.

Now I understand this is exactly what Marisa players have been doing do but with 2 interactions, but no one told me that. Every time I finished my combo before I just started thinking and maybe letting it reset to neutral when when I could just have practiced the entire round and not have to had a single though during the match, like Ken players do. I can now think 2 or 3 steps ahead before the round even starts and let Jesus take the wheel afterwards
I think what I just said might be obvious for pros and else but no one ever mentions it. Practicing scenarios turns the game into an actual rock paper scissors as long as you have perfect execution. With some knowledge of your opponent you can basically know what he is going to throw beforehand and apply statistics to make the guesses more accurate.
Of course it all goes to shit the second I get hit instead but as Mike Tyson says everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.

It depends on the character. Ness will still fuck your shit up with a back throw at 90 but toon link isn’t doing that anymore. Grab game was really overcentralized for the majority of 4’s lifespan thanks to the lack of truly safe moves on shield and the speed of shield grab out of stun. Ultimate nerfed both the ability to get grabs and their potency, forcing more characters into a niche where grabs are either combo extenders or positioning tools, not frame 6 kill moves. Maybe they went too far considering how nerfed grabs are in general after the area of chain grabbing.

Balancing grabs and throws is hard, though. Aside from my designated chain/combo throws (gura’s dthrow, kiara’s/fwmc’s uthrow), I’m not sure what to do with them. They tend to just kill at like 70 against no/bad DI, or send away at some okayish angle that doesn’t do much.

On the topic of throws, I need to fix fwmc’s dthrow. I already had to rework their uthrow and now their dthrow feels too long and clunky

I feel like that's the same with Smash. Most throws, if not for combos or killing, are just for getting someone off stage or just tacking on extra damage.
