ah figured out why it went so much different in koyos playthrough!
1. she did a bit more grinding than me/got hit more, didn't realize it but koyos party all had around 6k hp, mine had barely 4
2. more important! i used osmosis to take the emperors mp away which was a bit of a mistake because if he has no mp he just melees every round and since he lifesteals, this explains why her fight took 5 minutes and mine had me wanting to die, as he heals about 2k hp every time he hits you
i ended up letting he kill everyone and just reviving them with a couple hp and not healing them, just using ultima and flare (each did about 1k damage) still took forever even though at the end he was just healing for 400 each hit

overall i enjoyed ff2, glad i played it!

yeah! did a run after watching koyos, i really enjoyed it for most of the way
the encounter rate was too high and the rate things grow at is too slow but i was able to finish it without grinding once, going out of my way, or being too annoyed so
did turn off encounters in a couple dungeons because theyre too long and can't imagine the joy of having no quick saves and getting randomly konkoyod

My chromebook chose a REALLY bad time to not be fully charged for this. I'm gonna have to miss all the comments on here you folks are gonna make and such ;_;
If Koyori and chat are smart they'll make her pick Luigi here. He can jump higher than Mario and there's one bit in World 2 where you need to hit a hidden block and run and jump on it as Mario (whereas Luigi he can reach it easily. Also if I remember correctly that in the oriignal you need to beat the game EIGHT times before you can unlock world's A-D (whereas the all-stars version you unlock it right after beating World 8-4. Also in the original that when you unlock world 9 (which is done by taking NO WARPS) you get stuck in a loop and when you beat 9-4 I "think" it loops you back to 9-1 until you die (you have a single life) whereas the all stars version when you unlock world 9 (again still need to beat 8-4 without taking any warps) you go straight to world A after beating 9-4 (if you took ANY warps to reach 8-4) you would go straight to A-1 when you beat 8-4).

Oh, I also think (I could be wrong mind you so if anyone wants to correct me please do so) if she runs out of lives she'll either;

- Start again on that level that she died on (Mario All-stars version did this which made the game more forgiving).
- Start again but at the start of the world that she's currently on. So if she dies on 2-4 she'll go right back to 2-1.

Oh, I forgot about another two things;

- There's a wind feature that'll blow either Mario / Luigi across to the right that'll fuck Koyori over. It'll be in a few levels but I know there's at least "two" levels where you need to rely on the wind while you are using a spring to jump over large gaps.
- 8-2 has a secret exit that must be taken otherwise the level will loop endlessly. All I remember is that it involves hitting a red koopa with wings out of the air and you hitting a block that produces a vine. I don't think Koyori will know this and might need to rely on her chat to backseat her (that's assuming she reaches world 8 mind you).

So let me just compile it all into one reply;

- Mario is "hard mode" and Luigi is "easy mode".
- You need to beat the game EIGHT times in order to unlock worlds A-D No I do not know the button combination you need to press so you'd need to google it.
- To unlock world 9 you need to beat the game WITHOUT taking a warp. World 9 also loops endlessly so when you beat 9-4 it takes you right back to 9-1. You also have a single life here.
- When you get a game over you "may" or may not start on the level you got a game over on if you hit continue. So if you died on 2-4 you "might" get to start on that very level if you hit "continue". If not you might start back at 2-1.
- There's a wind feature that'll mess up your game that appears in some levels but there's at least two levels that heavily rely on it as well as jumping on a spring.
- 8-2 has a secret exit that MUST be taken otherwise the level endlessly loops. I "think" you need to hit a koopa with wings out of the air that lets you reach the block that produces the vine and allows you to reach the exit to 8-3.

Also, do you remember how in 1-2 that if you take the secret exit it leads you directly to a pipe? Well if Koyori went the secret way she would have to do another short path (that would no doubt cost her a life) and THEN once that's done you would then reach the pipe that takes you to another world. But doing that would deny her the pleasure to World 9.
Lost Levels is VERY unforgiving and it will punish you if you're not skilled at the game.

For example, there's a level in World 2 (I think its the first or second level) that has a hidden block that you need to hit and then jump on and then jump onto the pipe to then reach another part which then takes you to the end of that level. Mario needs to run and jump to land on that block (which may screw Koyori over) and then also needs to run and jump in order to reach the pipe because otherwise he won't be able to reach it. Luigi on the other hand does "not" need to run and can easily reach the block and pipe just by jumping. You DO need to direct him though otherwise he won't reach it and you die.

Yup, it was 2-2 that had THAT part. I also noticed that Koyori proved me wrong and that she DID manage to jump on the block (she had to run to get on it though). But reaching the pipe still sadly killed her because she had to run to reach it and she has so little space to get the running jump.
And while she can use Luigi to make the jump easier, won't she need to redo world 1 all over again? or would her progress allow her to stay on World 2?

Yes but he not only accelerates slower he slides around even without jumping so he can easily slide off smaller platforms if at run speed and even at walk speed he slides a little

Allstars tones down the acceleration issues and gives some QOL improvements like the Maze sections having a Chime if you get the right paths.
In SMB2 FDS it means Koyori's going to be in the maze and have no hints send to her just like in Transformers.

I have yes. The way they play it would make playing as Luigi really difficult would it not? Probably best for Koyori to stick using Mario because if she used Luigi, she'd slide off platforms because Luigi doesn't have good speed like what Mario does.

For Luigi it's not so much speed as it is he has, for lack of a better word, momentum so he takes longer to slow down and speed up which is where his controls being "slippery" comes in.

Speaking of things we're noticing for the first time. I never realized the collision wasn't perfect for hitting the blocks so you can actually hit them and NOT lose your upwards speed if you hit it in the right spot.

Seriously? I genuinely don't mean this in a bad way or anything but I seriously didn't know that block existed at all. I genuinely thought it was a "running jump" you had to make Mario do to reach the pipe and here Koyori blows my mind with another block existing.

It's most notable when you're learning to run and you start shifting between speeds more. At a slow speed you won't notice and constantly running will just feel like normal deceleration. Also if you aren't alternating between the two bros you wouldn't notice it as much it'd just feel like how the game is made.

Seeing Koyori playing SMB2 yesterday inspired me to play on Switch since I hadn't played in some years, i used warps and beat 8-4, since I didn't play it as much as SMB1 or other Mario games some of the levels were hard(4-3 was I the one I remembered the least) but on the other hand levels like 8-3 weren't as hard as I remembered.
