/v/ is for discussion about things that are settled works, or at least were 15 years ago. Back then, video games came out, you played them, and you could discuss them, but there was no good reason to keep a "general" for a game up unless you wanted a "community" vibe or something, which wasn't what /v/ was about.
Like, it doesn't make much sense to have a "Fallout General" on /v/ because you could just make threads on any of the games and get specific discussion about a specific game, or even just a topic about said game.
But for things that are "live content," generals just make more sense, since you're basically going to be up all the time anyways. So for live content games, streams, etc, there's no reason not to always have a thread up, and if that's true, posting in the catalog is about them is a huge waste of time.
Hell, that's why /sp/ basically had generals up and at full throttle even before /vg/ was a thing.
