I made a sort of mood board kinda like the one Iriya made (you can probably hunt in the archives for it), showed the artist my character inspirations (a few anime characters and western characters, 2 video game characters mish-mashed together + elements of things I like and icons I came up with). I have worked with two different designers on different occasions and also a third artist who I guess technically also counts as a designer who produced a model but not a separate design sheet. The design process is probably more than most people think they want to spend at first, but working with somebody with expertise and practice in taking various ideas and concepts and reducing them into a clear design is worth the time and money.

In my experience though, most internet/twitter artist aren't willing to help much with design. Anytime I sent a sliver of something resembling a "mood board" with characters I like, colors, lore etc, they either bailed out or straight out ignored the direction and did their own thing. Maybe I've just been unlucky

I'm looking at all of the stuff I dumped on my artists over the months and it comes to about 15 different references to things I don't own, about 15 different pieces I do own, 30 or so pages of notepad files of lore, descriptions, etc for the character, and past models and assets.
