I will admit that i'm quite blinded by the corpos numbers that i'm not entirely sure how much is considered sustainable for an indie even though i follow a lot of them.

it depends

It's more about money than subs or views. An indie with 2k subs who consistently donate will be more successful than an indie with 40k casual subs.

Depend on their motive as indie vtuber. If its for money then as long they can sustain themself i consider them as
sucessful vtuber. If its for hobby then as long they happy & make their fans happy its good enough for me.

A combination of being entertain, leeching off a big name talent and having a viral clip or meme.

Or leaving hololive.

If you're just doing it for fun then even a hundred regular viewers who tune in to your stream is successful.

And if you're going into it thinking you'll make money, then consider flipping burgers instead; more valuable use of your time.

That depends how much she depends on the chuuba business for money, most indies are part timers anyway.

Not sure about Vtubers, since the price of entry is pretty high nowadays
For a regular NA streamer, ~200 viewers per stream and >500 Twitch subscribers would be the minimum to live off of just streaming.
But that's because it would also attract occasional donations, ads and once a month a sponsorship.

If I was an indie I'd consider 30 people watching my stream a success, but I consider streaming a hobby, not a job.

- Plenty of money and/or skills to make high quality assets on your own.
- Ability to advertise yourself well.
- Decent social skills and some unique talent - be it singing, drawing, playing some instrument etc.
- Sadly most importantly you need high skills in sucking off big people. Get between the big indie guys and they will push you high.

Also define "success" - for a lot of indies just having fun and talking with these 10 viewers that check their stream is success and they are fine with it.

I'd say getting in top 5% or so is pretty successful, so around 30~40 viewers and ~1K5 subs/twitch followers is already quite big.
Barely anyone can really live from it tho but it depends how dedicated/loyal the audience you cultivated is, some vtubers with similar popularity can have a gigantic difference donations.
No jokes nearly 99% of vtubers stream to less than 5 people, most for not even 2 people, getting 10~20 regular is already a huge milestone. Most quit after a while of streaming days and days talking to an empty chat.

As far as how you get there, it's almost all network and luck, sure maybe being talented can be a bonus but honestly I see many big indies without anything going for them aside from knowing the right people or having had that one viral clip, and countless talented small indies who give it there all for months without ever going anywhere. So really, mostly luck and network.

If you can get more than 10 viewers consistently you're pretty much in the top 10 percent, so I'd say that.

30-40 viewers is more like top 1%, you have no idea how many streamers stream to less than 10 viewers or even no viewers at all.

100 viewers puts you at the 95th percentile of vtubers.

I can't imagine myself having five viewers. This market isn't easy at all.

1000 views is worth 2$ on average
so 40k views on stream/vods per day could be considered well paying day-job...?

This. Too many fags nowadays are blinded by corpo or top tier streamers as >>7498078 admitted to realize that everyone walks a different path of life.
Some people don't actually need a shit load of money to be scrapped in because they already have a full time job or something meaningful on the side. They just do it for enjoyment and a little extra profit to boot. It's really not all black and white like the market describes it as so as long as they're fulfilled I believe they can pat themselves on the back
