I've never had an ear infection but one time I had a pimple in my ear which was probably the most painful thing I've experienced in my life. Even a feather brushing against my earlobe would cause searing pain from my ear down to my shoulder. Worst was when sleeping if I involuntarily turned over and laid on the bad ear I would almost throw up from pain waking up. I remember figuring out it was a pimple by shining a light into my ear with a mirror and seeing the white head so I grabbed one of those earwax pickers, put it next to the white head, gritted my teeth and just dragged it across the pimple as hard as it could which made it explode in my ear. The intense pain followed by the relief was almost orgasmic. I stopped wearing earbuds after that cause I just assumed that's what caused it.

Your ears are insanely sensitive due to how hearing works and your inner ear also acts as your body's gyroscope so ear problems can really mess with your sense of balance. I remember slamming the side of my head right on my ear with the door as I was climbing into my car once and I just about threw up from the pain and vertigo. The only feeling like it I can compare it to is getting hit in the balls its that bad and nauseating.
