She was the perfect character for this sort of medium, as she feel very fresh, and became viral with everyone. Even the Hololive girls were making references to her. The thing is that many people were somewhat disillusioned with how vtubing changed and it stopped being about role-playing a character, and anyone who debuted withheld kayfabe for 2-3 months, and then just became themselves. So her, role-playing into an oujo-sama covered that void perfectly... then, after two-three months, people realized that there was a reason why vtubers drop kayfabe and became themselves - because role-playing gets stale fast. A great anime character is great, just because you are exposed to it for very little. Like, most anime have 13 episodes - hours wise, an 13 episodes anime is shorter than many streams, of medium length. So being exposed to a character for 20-40 hours, without the narrative drive of an anime, and seeing things like character development and stuff, makes that fucking character boring. So role-playing doesn't work that well for vtubers, because viewers lose interest. So to cover for that flaw, vtuber mix their character with their IRL self - an now Pekora has a backstory with her family, she moved alone after being a NEET for many years, has a degree in childcare, she goes to some restaurant or something. Kaela goes to Japan, she has a date with Kronii. IRyS has an adventure at the bank. That one is pursuing their dreams, this other one worked in a black company before, and so on. Even Luna, who is one of the Hololive vtubers who leans into role-playing the most, is a professional programmer and drives a Harley Davidson. And all those things make them more interesting as people for the audience. Building your whole streaming career on a role-playing a character works as well as building your streamer career on a single game - it will work great at first, then you decline like crazy together with the game.
