I played a lot with /a/ a very long time ago and my own interest pushed me into learning the game more deeply. Getting started you really don't need to know all of the yaku, as long as you know the super basic ones. Understanding Tanyao, Pinfu, Honitsu, Chinitsu, Toitoi, and Yakuhai is enough to get going. Yaku are more intuitive than they seem at first glance.

The basic structure of any hand is four sets of three and a pair, don't open your hand unless you're sure you have a yaku, and you can play some games and get the flow of it. The reality is at some point you will have to memorize the yaku, but you don't have to learn it all at once to get started.

Once you know the Yaku and have an understanding I highly recommend reading Daina Chiba's Riichi Book 1. This is all the standard advice you'll get from anyone throwing advice at beginners. /vg/'s Mahjong thread might have better beginner resources so you could look or ask there.

Do not be disheartened. You will lose a lot. Mahjong is very much like poker where you can make correct decisions and still lose. It's a game where you're playing for EV.

I went to Japan for the first time in March, all by myself, with very limited Japanese.
It was a total fucking blast, but my friends want to go with me next time and I'm worried about exactly what Mint mentioned, but in reverse. They get tired really easily (peak Americans)
