In japan you see things like major companies seeking out vtubers for advertisement purposes, vtuber music plays on the radio, there's ads for vtubers on giant billboards, you go into convince stores and hear they had vtubers sing little jingles for the stores, the NPB will do events where they have vtuber do commentary over their games, vtubers appear on TV, etc.
In japan vtubing has really found and proliferated it's own vein within the larger "mainstream "culture and neither Bonebro thought this would replicable in the US (tho Mori called herself out for being a pessimist and did a slight 180 afterward)
That's not to say western/U.S vtubers can't become popular, but that popularity is confined to the internet, and you probably won't turn on Good Moring American or NBC's Today show and see they're interviewing a vtuber
