What you put into the kernel before you enter the game influences the games enemies, anything after that has no effect. John added his grandma's ashes after he entered the game, so it had no effect on the enemies.
Also, dave's crow being unhelpful was just it being an asshole, the trolls put their lusi in, which don't speak troll, but the game let them speak to their players. Rose put her cat in, and it also spoke to her normally.

That created a boss monster who went back to the troll's session of the game, because that's a thing that can be done, and prevented them from moving into the new universe, leaving them trapped in their session of the game.
