"Where is Lamy's sake?!"

The shouting could be heard even here, at the other end of the hallway. You steeled your nerves and did your best to assume a neutral expression. Knocking on the door, you were immediately ushered into the room by two men clad in black suits.

Sorry for the wait, you said, as you put down the tray you were holding on a table made of beautifully carved cypress wood.

At the end of the table sat Yukihana Lamy, heiress to the Yukihana zaibatsu. And the Yukihana syndicate.

Taking care not to spill, you poured the clear liquid into Lamy's glass. Your shaking hands slightly complicated this task.

Not daring to make eye contact, you bowed deeply and then turned to leave through the door. "Stooop", Lamy said, and your way was blocked by the black-suited men. "I didn't say you could leave."

You were forced into a chair at the table, and Lamy reached for her drink. Raising the glass towards the ceiling, she gave a shout of "Cheers!" and brought it to her lips. A frown spread across her face, and you broke out in a cold sweat.

"Aah, it's lukewaaarm" she cried. "Lamy's Yukiyozuki is supposed to be served cold! This is because you were so slow to bring it up from the kitchen!". You blurted out some weak apology, offering to sprint back to the kitchen to fetch ice to chill it down.

"You had better apologize to me!" she sulked, then straightened her expression. "You know how to properly apologize to a lady, don't you?".

"Of course you do, you know our methods. You've been vetted by Lamy's father, or you wouldn't be allowed to serve me."

You knew very well what kind of company you worked for. Unconsciously, your hand moved to caress the snowflake tattooed onto the right side of your chest. It did not go unnoticed by Lamy. "The tattoo marks you as underling to our syndicate. In other words, you're Lamy's property."

With a specific hand signal from Lamy, the men in black suits left the room.

"Roll up your sleeve," Lamy demanded. "Lay your arm on the table."

"Ice? Honestly!"

Lamy rose from her chair and walked over to a cabinet. From it she took a wooden box.

"You've disrespected me twice today. Normally I would cut off one finger for not keeping Lamy's sake chilled, and another finger for suggesting I should water it down,". She opened the box, revealing a knife of blue steel. "but I will not be unreasonable." She slammed the lid on the box closed.

You've never thought of her as a troublesome woman!, you pleaded. It's just you had so many other tasks today, and you really did hurry, but-
Your stream of words was interrupted as Lamy's hand shot forward to pinch your tongue. Immediately your mouth froze, joints and muscles locked up. Your nerves screamed out in pain, but then they too were numbed. Your eyes filled with fear.

"There are other ways to cool down drinks. The nouveau riche westerners use stones, I hear."

She laid her own arm on the table, and realization set in. "Like I said, I won't take two of your fingers," said Lamy, a smile on her face.

"Just the one." She let her hand creep forward on the table, inching closer to yours.

If you moved even a muscle, she wouldn't stop at just a finger. You tensed, your right hand gripping the table so hard that your knuckles turned white.

This time Lamy controlled the flow of her magic, ever so slowly sapping the heat from your little finger. Your fingernail turned blue, darker and darker blue. You felt the veins in your hand cooling, gradually slowing their pumping as the blood in the finger clogged and eventually froze. Next, a searing heat spread out from your finger to the rest of your hand as hypothermia set in. Then nothing, as your nerves died.

Satisfied with her work, Lamy lifted your hand and grasped your little finger. With a sharp CLINK, she snapped it off.

Returning to her seat at the other side of the table, Lamy added your finger to her glass of sake and swirled it around.

"You can take him away now," Lamy raised her voice for the suited subordinates outside. Shaking, from fear or from how cold you felt, you stood from the chair. Sick with relief, you were taken to a doctor and then given the rest of the day off.

(You) are a famous swordfighter who once belonged to the strongest party in all the lands. You and your friends were living legends and no foe was too strong to stand in your way, so long as you had them by your side. Those days are over now, and your legend is beginning to fade. The memories of better days spent nurturing the bonds you had forged still haunt you as you wander aimlessly, seeking cheap pleasures and taking odd jobs to get through each day. One night, when catching up with some old friends, you hear rumours of an incredibly powerful group of women who claim to be aiming for "world domination". Intrigued by both their strength and their high bounty, you take up the request to hunt them down. Despite being a man with nothing left to live for, never would you have expected this group of eccentric women to have a shot at moving your heart.

This is the first chapter of my take on both the fighting HoloX and HoloX hypnosis prompts (this chapter is mostly the former, not so much the latter). About two thirds of it is pure anime/chuuni/Devil May Cry-inspired action with swords and magic where people are allowed to float in the air so long as they're performing a combo. I had a lot of fun writing this, but don't expect a second part anytime soon since I'll be working on my other WIPs. I'm only releasing this because it was sitting finished in my folder for a while so I thought I may as well drop it here. This was originally going to be a oneshot for the first contest but it snowballed and well, here we are. Enjoy!

The halls echoed with cheer, the sound of footsteps racing through the hallways. Jubilant laughter and footsteps rapidly approached my room. "There they go again," I murmured with a wistful sigh, a mere spectator in their jubilant world, as two figures darted past my bedroom door. First came Kanata, an angel in a girl's body, her glistening snow-white hair bobbing up and down as she made her escape, laughing the entire time. For an angel, she was pretty mischievous. It kept us all on our toes, truth be told. In hot pursuit was Towa, the benevolent demoness, with her lavender twintails trailing behind her like streamers in the wind as she pursued Kanata. Towa's laughter, intertwined with attempts to speak, filled the hallway with a warmth that belied her demonic heritage. In her, there was no trace of malevolence, only a pure heart and an overflowing fountain of kindness.

From my vantage point, I was always a few steps behind those two, observing them from afar. Their friendship was a beautiful thing, it thrummed with life, with color. Kanata, bestowed with the voice of heaven, struggled to voice her feelings, struggled to voice her love for others. Towa, for all her demonic origins, was a ray of kindness in a world of malice, she was a beacon of love in a world of hate. Except for a few times when she played video games, but that's a different story.

Watching them, I often wondered about the true nature of their bond. To the untrained eye, they were just two friends, caught up the camaraderie and laughter. But I saw the stolen glances, the fleeting touches, the silent conversations that spoke volumes. Kanata's eyes often lingered on Towa, her deep blue eyes filled with an emotion too vast to name, yet she cloaked it in silence, her heart's whispers falling on mute lips.

Just as I had retreated to my bed for the night, lost in thought about their relationship, the laughter abruptly ceased. A chilling silence fell over the hallway, heavy, thick-- as if the very air had solidified. My curiosity getting the better of me, drew me back to the door. Peering out, the hallway was eerie, completely devoid of the life that had filled it mere moments ago.

Then, from the far end of the hallway, a sound shattered the stillness-- one visceral, heart-wrenching scream, unmistakably Kanata's. It was followed by chilling silence, a silence that made my entire spine shiver in fear. Kanata warned me about this day, but it was nothing like she told me. My heart began to hammer, panic began to clutch my soul with its icy fingers. The once jubilant night just became my worst nightmare. As I stood frozen, blankly staring down the hallway, I knew nothing would ever be the same again.

I fucking love this. This is the kind of fun and hype I want to feel when coming here to read. The action is probably some of the best in the archive and I personally find it great how you put aside some realism to create some of the coolest sequences I've seen in a written medium. The way you write movement flows really nicely and there's enough other things going on during the fighting to make me care. I could picture everything so clearly and it felt like a high-budget anime was playing out inside my head. The finale was the cherry on top with Anon tanking all those attacks and I liked that you recreated the picture in your post. I'm with Koyori on this, how is he still alive? I wish I could express just how excited the action got me, because my eyes were glued to the screen the entire time.

His interactions with all the characters, not just HoloX but Shion too, were charming to read. Gives me a lot of Dante vibes. In fact, is Anon just Dante in this? I think I would have liked to see some more plot weaved in since a lot of this was Anon just wailing on the girls, but 16k words is already a hefty chunk so I understand wanting to leave it for later. You've hinted at a more sombre past and Koyori's supposed hypnosis potion, so I'm really fucking excited for the next part-

No I've been around since very shortly after the abuse threads morphed into /wg/, I caught the whole arc from beginning to end. It's exactly because I remember the incendiary bait responses that I found the difference so striking when I reached out out of curiosity a couple months after he nuked on other anons' recommendation. Not that I think it'd be a good idea for him to actively post here anymore with the residual vitriol hanging around but at least in my personal experience I've developed the impression he's a pretty friendly and relaxed person, and more importantly, a curious one. It's fun to talk to someone earnestly interested in trying to match your tastes, a far cry from many other commission experiences I've had.

I've commissioned other people who just hit the bullet points without much inquiry and put a bow on it, but he questions and revises dozens of times over. It's a shame that conceptually this feels like it barely dipped into the second half of the concept (the getting hypnotized by HoloX). Honestly it's a bit weird to staple the two concepts together in the first place since it lead to a situation like this of the first chapter and next presumably having clashing tones. Still, I like this first chapter and I like the concept you pitch for what's coming next so I'll wait for the next chapter.

This is a very short spin off for Balsa. I know it's not my most popular series but I'd encourage you to read this so that I can get some critique in how my writing style has improved (or not). I've been reading some fantasy-adventure books and while I haven't finished them, I'd like to test out a bit of what I've picked up while it's still fresh in my head.

It's only five pages so I'd encourage you to give it a chance. It's short, fast and too the point but that was my intention. This was more a practice in prose and action scenes rather than for it to be a story all unto itself. I hope I improved at least a little and if I haven't, tell me why.

Ohhh... interesting you should bring that up. I'm not sure what you interpreted that as but I added his ability as a metaphor for him being unable to leave behind his glory days and always returning to the adventurer's life (thus moving to/bringing back his sword), a part of his emotions which I planned to expand on later. It was partially inspired by Noct's warp strikes in FFXV, but I had other candidates for his ability and eventually settled on this after forming an idea for his character. This is the first time someone has noticed a metaphor/bit of symbolism in my fics so I'm pretty happy.
