Thats not the translation quality its just chinese fiction. Basically, everything they do is one of those "romeo and juliet but X" stories, and they stuck really hard to the romeo and juliet format so even if they got completely sidetracked in one part, it always transitions to the next scene from romeo and juliet. To an audience conditioned to the genre 'of course this would happen next, this has to happen next' but to an uninitiated observer trying to figure out the story's progression with logic it is a complete disconnect.

As a former honkai player: you are absolutely correct.

In broad strokes, the main story kinda makes sense in terms of the emotional beats. But there seems to be a LOT of assumed knowledge with much of it early on coming with the assumption that you're familiar with the previous game.
When it comes to ANY of the side modes or captainverse shit, all bets are off. No idea what's going on half the time, I can't tell if event stories are meant to be standalone or is a continuation from something I haven't seen before, I'm just completely lost. The main story is the only thing I could follow and even then, I kinda didn't do the whole Elysian Realm mode so eventually I just got real confused when the main story suddenly revolves around Mei in the Elysian funtimes.

And yes, I also strongly suspect that something funky was going on with the translation. Like not that it was poorly translated in an obvious way, just that it felt very wordy and clunky at times that seemed a bit unnatural.
