The amount of actual people involved has nothing to do with it, it could be literally one guy, it could be several hundred with the same opinion, a bunch of faceless comments on the internet with the same opinion become a single "identity", but people for evolutionary reasons have and always will focus on negative opinions and put more stock in them. So thousands of people saying you specifically are awesome and they love the stuff you do feels like a few friendly people being nice to you because they're just nice, and even one guy spamming over and over about how much he hates you specifically will feel like the entire population truthfully telling you how awful you are. It doesn't matter if that person is clearly mentally ill or not, that's just how the brain works, it's emotional, not rational. The difference here is how you respond to that, some people in this situation who are most suited to being content creators deal with it by wanting to prove negativity wrong or by putting their energy into positivity, others deal with it by shutting down and backing away from attention. The initial feeling is pretty universal though.
