there are certain unspoken rules you cant break and you dont know them until you have the experience
if you can pay up for someome to design it for you, I suggest watching some youtube videos on character design before attempting again

I can give you 2 simples rules right now:
1- less is more: over complicated designs have their own reasons to exist, but unless you really need it go for as simple as possible. Not only it will be easier for fan artists to draw but also it will be easier to rig.

2- Everything must have a purpose: in design nothing is superfluous. If there is a head accessory, there should be a reason for that to exist, like for example, if your character is a unicorn you can get something in the shape of a horn.
Design begins with a question: "Why is this here? " If you cant fit it on the overall theme, remove it.
A good designer will have double or triple meanings, and a higher levels the buillshit get so hard it borders on gaslighting.
The best designer is also the greatest con artist.

I streamed hanafuda last night and tried to give a tutorial but viewers were still confused. I was wondering if I should make a PowerPoint presentation series and put it on YouTube as well to make it easier for people to follow along. But, if 30 people are saying they have an issue with a scene, that’s 20%. We are starting to have a problem.

People forget that customers make a lot of impulse decisions to do things like buy books or stream. They aren’t sitting there with an abacus trying to calculate which author’s books to buy, and they aren’t running Excel sheets with regards to which VTubers to subscribe to.

If the product doesn’t give then the impulse to buy it, whether it’s a candy bar, a tube of mascara, a book, or a Twitch subscription, the onus is on the product and whoever is producing it — not on competitors in the free market.

It’s a lot easier to be bitter and blame others rather than to accept that…

- Not every product is for everyone! You will never sell a Snickers bar to someone with a severe peanut allergy
- You do actually have to produce content to sell content, and time spent complaining is better spend refining your own product. Cope. Don’t seethe.
- Even if you have a niche appeal that only appeals to 1 in 100 people…there are a lot of people out there. Make up for your niche appeal with marketing volume.

I played Koi-Koi Japan on Steam last night. I don’t recommend this client if you have other options. I recommend just buying a deck for like $15 on Amazon.

Best options for various platforms:

Switch: 51 Clubhouse Games, uses standard Nintendo rules, good tutorial system, local 2P, no online multiplayer I believe

Android: Hanafuda Koi-Koi Dojo, has online play with lobby codes and against randoms

Any platform with Yakuza: Yakuza games with koi-koi. I know Yakuza 7 had it. I think Yakuza 8 might? I have to check for research.

iOS: Kiki’s Koi Koi is in English but the AI deals itself better hands than it should get statistically. Namely, it seems to deal itself Moon and Cherry Blossom Viewing cards on its first turn at a statistically improbable rate. As well as dealing itself four cards of the same month, an instant win condition, at an improbably high rate. It also does not show you which plain/chaff/kasu cards have been claimed which makes the card counting aspect more difficult. No online multiplayer but it does have local 2P.

Steam: Koi-Koi Japan is good and the different AIs are unique but…it doesn’t give you double scores if you get over 7 points or if you koi-koi, which is non-standard.

Hanafuda is a good gimmick. It's unique, suits your theming, you have passion for it and it provides good opportunities for community engagement through playing games with you viewers and the possibility of friendly tournaments. I'd by no means recommend making it your bread and butter however. Mahjong has taken off in the vtuber sphere recently but that had Phase Connect as a whole behind it with Pippa getting addicted to it and almost forcing people at gunpoint to play. If you want hanafuda to take off in a similar fashion you'll need to do the same and focus on convincing other vtubers to play it.
Hanafuda is something that's very uniquely you among vtubers and you should play into that, but if you lean on it too hard it might become a ball and chain.

I'm Taiwanese-American. Taiwan was hugely influenced by Japanese culture. As an Asian-American, I try to engage in my culture in healthy ways by engaging with traditional pan-Asian games, handcrafting (kumihimo), and other hobbies.

This is why I got into hanafuda, mahjong, and, when my health is better, why I want to take a martial art -- ideally naginata, but more realistically, kendo, because it's hard to find a naginata dojo in America.

Other games I'm planning on learning are shogi, go, and karuta. Karuta is a poetry-themed matching game, but, I don't speak Chinese or Japanese, so, realistically, I can't learn that unless there's an English translation. There is at least one karuta anime.

It has been hard to find people that are interested in playing hanafuda with me IRL because a lot of people find the game to be boring. They'd rather play Western board games. Totally cool, I get it! There's nothing wrong with that.

But, I would personally like to play hanafuda, so I am going to play a lot of hanafuda for now.

My character, the ghost mom, is based on me, and I know the subject matter can come off as very touchy. For me, it's a way of working through emotions I have about the fact that, unfortunately, I am likely not going to have children.

My character is an ubume -- Japanese ghost of a woman who died in childbirth or with young children, who soul is not at rest because of, depending on interpretation, either:

a.) worrying for her kids
b.) desire for motherhood

For me, it's a combination of both. I am worried about a lot of people and how they're doing, and am a very maternal type. I am also 'mourning' the fact that I won't get to be a mom, because I have a few unfortunate conditions that may lead to me needing a hysterectomy in the near future.

So, although my topic matter is sensitive, there's a real personal connection there and it's not just 'lol edgy.' I'm not saying your plan to be a soldier is 'lol edgy,' but I would say that perhaps your LARP aspect should involve a fictional country, so it doesn't come off as a case of stolen valor.

I don't know very much about this industry. That's just my take.

Design wise, having both a scar on your eye and red eyeshadow may make it look like your eye is bleeding, which may cause issues if somebody mistakenly tagged it as gore. This concern may be overblown on my part.

I would say war paint is a better fit for a soldier than eyeshadow, and makeup will make your character look less 'realistic' as a soldier.

That said:

ignoring design, the first thing you should be doing is retexturing the hair, VRoid hair looks like shit, ame-chan's hair texturing style works fine and it's simple enough to do, just keep it fairly flat colored with a nice looking highlight. Frankly a lot of the vtuber model will not be seen unless you do something that requires full body, so first and foremost I'd recommend getting some really attractive face. I think Vei has the best chuuba model I've seen so even if the design has nothing to do, the technical skill and detail level is something that you could set as a goal for what a good 3d chuuba model looks like
If I had time I'd make a quick guide to fancying up even the ugliest models because Vroids meshes look fine and with hanatools you can get decent arkit tracking, the texturing and Mtoon shading are the biggest problems of vroid models. Also use Warudo, it's better than vnyan so long as you can run it, includes bunch of fancy shit and nice pendulum stuff to emulate l2d models
I like the robot approach, but Vroid will suck at it so in all honesty go for the tattoo options. Obligatory you should learn blender, it's easy as fuck as even the smallest edits to your vroid can help a lot
