Are Vtubers contractually obligated to be bad at videogames and/or retarded? Cause I've seen a lot of them, both western and japanese, be just really bad at whatever game they're playing and not knowing what to do even when the game is obviously telling them.

i know pro players who get shit viewership, a guy who has been promoted by a much bigger streamer and participated and done well in streamed tourneys that regularly streams to about 0-4 people. another pro that everyone in the community would recognize his name and be able to name his big moment, pulls maybe 100-200 ccv.

I get it's for entertainment, hence me joking about being "contractually obligated" in the OP. However, I believe there is a gray area between "flawlessly and expertly playing games with barely any mistakes" and "not getting past the bells at the start of Infinite for half an hour". The former can be stale and unfun to watch, but the latter turns the inverse relation of entertainment and gameplay quality into an exercise in horseshoe theory.

On top of that, getting good at a game generally requires time to practice and a lot of repetition. Do you really want to watch your oshi practice a combo in a fighting game for 3 hours and study oki setups? Or do you just want to watch her hop into a new game and have fun while yapping?

Watching someone who has played a video game so much that they fly through it like it's nothing is boring AF. Watching someone coming into a game for the first time and being both terrified and awe inspired by it, that's entertainment.

People that are constantly in the zone don't make for every interesting reactions. I suppose speed runners have an audience, but it's not the same audience, and I don't think it's as large an audience (though I don't have the CCV's on hand so don't quote me there).

I've seen many many streamers, even very experienced ones and speedrunners, talk about how much harder it is to be entertaining on stream and focus on a game at the same time. Having to divide your attention is a huge intelligence debuff. Unless you're already very experienced with a game you will miss obvious things, and even for experienced players where the game is routine, the advantage they have is that they know in advance which parts of the game they need to ignore chat to focus on for a minute.

I stream occasionally for friends and a niche community and even with only like 4 people watching and chatting I already notice that I'm much worse at it than when I play the same thing offline. Then add to that the sheer variety of games most chuubas play (such that they're always having to figure new things out) and that they probably haven't been spending hours playing games every day for most of their lives and I can totally understand the difficulty, even if it's a bit frustrating to watch sometimes.

tl;dr, streamer brain isreal. I'm a guy, and pretty decent at most genres. There are a few games I would even say I'm extremely good at. But I'm also a vtuber.

When streaming, if you're actually trying to be entertaining instead of a boring mouthbreather who just sits and plays in silence, you have to pay attention to and think about so many little things that your gamplay is severely affected. I would estimate I play an average of 60% my best. You wouldn't think it's that bad, since none of the tasks are hard, but it's a death by a thousand cuts.

Can confirm. Imagine you have a 2 frame window to do something in a 60 fps game. That's about 33 milliseconds. If you're focused, it's tricky, but not impossible.

Now do it while trying to read chat, talk to people, and think of jokes to make, while making sure you speak very clearly and directly into the mic. Not likely. You can pause and focus on that one part, but you're likely not in your groove/flow state. It's no wonder AGDQ has people on the couch commentating. There are plenty of games where doing both just isn't a reasonable proposition at all, even for the best of the best.

If anything she's a direct example of the same multitasking distractions anons are talking about in this thread.
You can see her go dead silent occasionally to make it past the harder parts of a game, then immediately start struggling with comparatively trivial enemies or wandering into obstacles the moment she leaves the zone and starts chattering away again.
