Personally, I think /kuro/ is the most important anchor thread /news/ could hope to have, as it involves stuff that affects the entire vtubing industry, and in some cases threatens its existence, sometimes even being dangerous to individuals if they aren't made aware, and sadly spreading shit on social media is the only mechanism available to make folks aware of these sort of dangers and abuse.

I'll admit it does get a bit old when it's the same /kuro/ companies over and over again though... Rrats that relate to personal lives I can personally do without, though I must begrudgingly admit it's half of the reason the board exists.

>> No.72366941

>>72366640
The main reason I'd suggest keeping the /kuro/ anchor out is mostly because most of the stuff that was being linked to it could just be attached to the news anchor. While there's a lot of fog regarding some of the more dubious practices of black corpos, the real shit ends up being noteworthy regardless.
If /news/ was to ever expand into more informative/less investigative content, though, I would advise one such piece of coverage being something along the lines of "how to spot danger signs of a black corpo" either as a talent or as a viewer.

>I would advise one such piece of coverage being something along the lines of "how to spot danger signs of a black corpo" either as a talent or as a viewer.
That'd be a nice editorial. I went and got myself attached to V&U's Meeta before I read the /kuro/ list and now I'm afraid for her.

I just hope there's nothing wrong with EIEN as since Niji went pure black a lot of my corpo viewing is there. I mean, they're American, they can't be that bad, right? RIGHT!?

To avoid getting into drama, I'll just say that it's difficult to spot a black company when they're smaller and starting out, because a lot of things that could be seen as signs of being in a black corpo could just be early growing pains typical of newer startups and young executives. That's partly why intent and tone are so important when it comes to a corpo's actions and PR. It is easy to excuse incompetence borne of ignorance, especially if those in question are clearly willing to learn. It is much harder to give a pass to incompetence borne of malice. It is crucial to identify how a company responds to strife, both internally and externally. Learning to avoid trouble is important, but you can't avoid everything. Eventually, your ability to get out of trouble will be tested, and you will be judged for how you respond.

It's also important to understand that shifts in mangement and attitude can happen. Once a black corpo is not always a black corpo, just like how cleaner corpos can slip into the black if they don't keep themselves in check. Evaluate each scenario on its own, then evaluate it based on history. Be open to new information changing your preconceptions.

News on specific controversies can be pretty well buried, especially with small corpos, but termination notices stay up. You can tell a lot about a company through their termination notices, provided they aren't too old.

I've forgiven Idol, more or less. Despite publicly airing a sex scandal earlier, their handling of Pochi was alright, and I feel that she was largely at fault. Still, lot of grumbling from talents, and individual drama management probably should have mitigated, so I'm keeping a wary eye on them. Just saying it's not as though I've been jumping on every company at the slightest sign of danger or always siding with the liver.

>> No.72368383

>>72368244
There's also the scenario where both sides are partially at fault, too. Or neither is at true fault and it's just a bad match. Both happen all the time in the professional world, especially in entertainment sectors.
It can make you seem wishy-washy at times, but sometimes it's best to just be flexible in your opinions. Today's villain isn't always a villain, even in retrospect.

Bleh, looking into it now, I think...

"Sharing additional details", deleting all her videos, stuff I don't like to see in that notice. I suppose to be fair I'll have to dig further to find said "additional details", but I really don't like it when companies create sin-lists to make sure a talent can never work in the industry again, no matter what they did. Just wish her well and say goodbye - best way to warn other companies is simply to refuse to provide reference, no need to air all that shit to the general public. It's also no skin off the company's nose to keep videos for the fan's sake. It's not as if Youtube charges for storage space or that you can't deliberately unmonetized a channel.

>>72368383
Sometimes, yes. Sometimes they attempt charge $450K to quit the company. Doesn't really matter what kind of problematic menhera the talent may have been at that point.

Think you're confusing V&U and Idol.

V&U slapped their departing talent Serafi with a $450K invoice when she tried to quit an already expired contract, which they lied about, while also dragging her name through the mud.

The recent Idol fiasco involved Pochi wanting to quit before finishing donothon goals. In the end Idol bit the bullet, gave refunds and paid her off what was left, without dragging her name through the mud. (Actually Serafi left donothon goals unfulfilled as well, but unlike Pochi, she was not paid nor demanding to be paid for them.)

...Pochi was handled fairly well, but Idol still made public a sex scandal with Riro a ways back, so their record is a bit mixed. (I mean, yes, fire the two of them, but don't air their dirty laundry to the world.)

Considering that Riro made most of it public herself I don't see how idol could've approached it without revealing it. It's pretty much them confirming that yes, we are firing her because she took drugs on stream and offered to fuck high paying fans.

the Yen briefly fell to it's lowest valuation vs the Dollar since 1990 (34 years) before slightly recovering, currently sitting at around 151 yen to 1 dollar. By comparison, before the ukraine invasion it was around 115 yen per dollar.
Low valuation is great for exporters and corpos that make the majority of their money overseas, because each dollar they make abroad nets them more yen when they bring it back home.
But it's horrible for consumers, as everything they import is more expensive and their purchasing power decreases.
BoJ and Japan govt have indicated that they will intervene as necessary, but normie numberfags (stock traders) have indicated their intent to test the limits.
hopefully the yen recovers soon, so that JPbros can buy more chuuba merch, but if you westernbros have been thinking about a vacation to Japan now might be a good time.

Okay, sounds good so far
>If you're in swimwear it's okay to show ass as long as it's not in camera focus
>You're more or less exempt from most of the rules as long as you're actively engaging in or showing off the results of body art.
This changes jack shit. The keystone aspect of the rules that allows people to skirt around them still exists. And that's entirely ignoring the inconsistent enforcement problem Twitch historically has.

Twitch really needs to either defer to FCC rules, or simply say, "You can be sexy but not too sexy." and deal with it on an individual basis - which would be fine since they never tell you why you were banned anyways.

TL of the article (DeepL+clean-up):
A big difference visible between VTuber companies after fes.
Revenues generally increase, but ANYCOLOR takes a hit

How far can the momentum of VTubers, now a major force in the entertainment industry, continue?
Cover, which runs "hololive production", had a major expo at Makuhari Messe from March 16-17. Based on ticket sales, the event attracted some 86,000 visitors, about double last year's total of 45,000.
>[Chart] ANYCOLOR, the second-largest VTuber company, has seen slowing growth in the EN market
For the fiscal year ending March 18, 2023, Cover recorded 1.8 billion yen in revenue. The revenue this year is expected to far exceed that amount.
There were many attendees at the event, including tourists from faraway places. One of the most striking features was the large presence of overseas fans. Even from beyond Asia, there were people from Brazil and the United States.
>Popularity of Anime Overseas Spread to VTubers
"I've been watching hololive since 2020, and I watch it about twice a day, before and after work". David, 30, an American working in Japan, says that watching hololive has become a hobby for him.
Not only David, but many overseas fans also have an appreciation for anime. Sahil, an Indian who came to Japan on vacation, planned to attend Anime Japan 2024 next week, but was sad that he "couldn't buy a ticket" for it.
"I've been watching anime for seven years, but have really gotten into VTubers in the past two years," Sahil said. He has watched many "clips" on YouTube, as well as Japanese-speaking VTubers, and has come to understand somewhat of the Japanese language.
The growing popularity of anime overseas has spread to VTubers as well.
In addition to the large number of foreigners, there was also a shocking amount of merchandise sales.
A huge area in the convention hall was set aside for merchandise sales, from which issued long lines of fans waiting in lines. The sales are supported by "oshikatsu" (oshi support), where people by plushies of their oshis and decorates their bags with a large number of badges.
The VTuber industry is in the midst of unusual surge. However, some uncertainties have arisen.
ANYCOLOR, a competitor of Cover which runs "Nijisanji", released its quarterly report for Q3 (ending April '24) on March 14. Sales and income grew by about 20% year-over-year, driven mainly by merchandise.
The day after the report, ANYCOLOR stock fell to the stop-loss level. While total Q3 showed an increase in sales and profit, for the previous quarter (Nov. '23-Jan. '24), sales were up only 4.4% year-over-year and profit was down 20.1% year-over-year. Despite the y/y growth in Q3, it was not enough to make up for the disappointment of Q2 in the market.
>Deficit Grows at Festivals at End of Year
One factor contributing to ANYCOLOR's sluggish performance was the two-day "Nijisanji Fes" held late in December. According to the company, while revenue from the fes was up 50% y/y, "higher-then-expected associated costs" increased the operating deficit and thus decreased the company's operating income.
Previously, ANYCOLOR had a strong market for high-return merchandise sales and promotions. In the previous year, merchandise sales and promotions accounted for 52.2% of Cover's revenue and 72% of ANYCOLOR's revenue. As a result, in terms of operating profit, there is a difference of more than double, with Cover's 16.7% and ANYCOLOR's 37.1%.
An industry insider stated, "For ANYCOLOR, with a profit margin of nearly 40%, the larger the scale of costly festivals, the lower the profit margin is likely to be". In this regard, Cover is unlikely to see a negative effect from their fes.
Even more worrisome than the decreasing profit margins is the ongoing struggle of "Nijisanji EN", a VTuber group focused on English-speaking regions, to make ends meet. In the previous year, Nijisanji EN accounted for 25% of ANYCOLOR's sales, and was expected to drive the company's future growth. However, recent sales are down 24.6% y/y, and merchandise sales, the main profit driver, are declining.
ANYCOLOR CFO (Chief Financial Officer) Shinya Tsurui stated at the March 14th meeting that the decline was partially due to "very good sales of certain products" last year, but added, "Nijisanji EN has some issues. We need to develop a stable structure for growth".
According to the company, it has not been able to keep up with creating training and other systems, which has delayed new VTuber debuts. In order to debut VTubers who will be successful in the mid- to long-term, "we will continue to develop a system to reduce delays and manage compliance issues" (Riku Tazumi, company representative).

The contract we saw only stops them from joining a corp after they leave. She’s a indie… technically

>> No.72419180

Feels like corpos can't do anything without people twisting it in a way to shit on them. Normally people would love to have more details about a situation like this but it seems like the vtuber community goes in the direction of "don't tell me anything about anything bad happening ever, I want escapism." And there's a degree of hypocrisy to it too, apparently indies are allowed to write huge screeds explaining their side but corpos aren't allowed to defend themselves against the allegations without getting a bunch of "How dare you respond to this instead of just saying nothing, you are evil." Which is funny because if they said nothing then it would be "How dare you remain silent about this, you are evil." Something about the vtubing fanbase in general is really rubbing me the wrong way lately. I guess it makes sense, since a lot of them are anime fans and anime fans are some of the dumbest people I've ever met. And I'm sure a fair amount of them are also teenagers with no critical thinking skills. And I have to keep in mind that social media such as Twitter profits from ragebaiting, so level-headed responses are never going to be the ones on top. There was a time when this was limited to /vt/ but this place has really poisoned the wider vtuber community. You can't escape it no matter where you go. But then again, that makes sense too. Vtubing has been around for so long that all the sane people have gradually been pushed away, and this is what it looks like when only the insane ones are left.

You copied this from a reddit post didn't you?
Anyway the reason why it happens is because corpos confuse "being transparent" with "covering their ass". Nobody has problems with idol being transparent when firing Riro, but when you have nijisanji attempting to cover their ass during the termination announcement and V&U using their termination announcement as an excuse to sling mud around obviously people are going to shit o them

>> No.72419568

>>72418919
Nijisanji EN has also been "roasted" [lit.: involved in a negative situation in which one receives intense criticism] since the beginning of the year. In February, ANYCOLOR terminated the contract of Nijisanji EN-affiliated liver "Selen Tatsuki", for "repeated breaches of her contract and incorrect and misleading statement on SNS".
However, in the statement to investors about the situation, the statement that "The impact of this decision on our financial results will be negligible" was met with outrage by overseas fans. [The article actually writes "(negligible)" after the JP version of the quote.] Later, the company's representative, Mr. Tazumi, even posted an apology video on YouTube in English.
Since "oshi support" is based on a relationship of trust between fans, oshis, and the company, such a situation could negatively effect the company's bottom line.
Questions were raised about the "roasting" at the quarterly report meeting. Mr. Tazumi stated, "There have been some delays in streaming content," and stressed that "we will re-build our relationship with fans by firmly developing measures that will boost Nijisanji EN as a whole in the future."
>Gap Between ANYCOLOR and Cover is Closing
Although the market cap for ANYCOLOR, which went public in 2022, was once nearly twice that of Cover's, which went public the next year, the gap is quickly narrowing following ANYCOLOR's recent drop in price. It may be that we are entering a phase of intense competition within the industry.
As opposed to the struggling ANYCOLOR, Cover is expanding its overseas operations. On March 12, they announced a new branch office in the United States.
President Motoaki Tanigo, who took the stage at the announcement, spoke enthusiastically, stating, "The NA region has great potential for MD (merchandise) revenue and licensing agreements, and we expect to expand the scale of revenue in the future. The new branch will develop content for local needs and promote connections with local companies.
Will the VTuber company, which is growing rapidly, keep up with the demands of the stock market? The success or failure of the overseas market, which has great potential, is key.

>"being transparent" with "covering their ass"
More like they conflate "covering their ass" with "slander the vtuber so they can never work in the industry again". Basically it reads like management trying to paint the vtuber as insane to vengefully divert blame from themselves in case the higher ups peek in. They do this while absolutely terrifying all the remaining talents to keep them in line. ...and they have this inexplicable tendency to accidentally out bad behavior on their part in the process, revealing things entirely unnecessarily, often getting caught in extreme exaggerations or outright lies in the process.

And while Riro was one of those cases where it's pretty easy to pin it all on the chuuba - no, we shouldn't have heard about it. Sex scandals should be rrats, at best, not confirmed officially by the goddamn company.

Transparency is a croc. All they have to do is be NICE about it. "We regret we must part ways due to creative differences... ...they were a valued member... ...we wish them luck in their future endeavors.", one, simple, paragraph. If there is a sin list, let it be internal. If the fans witnessed heinous shit, it stays with the fans. If the vtuber wants to air their dirty laundry themselves, they can do that - unless they are doxxing, it's easy enough to ignore. If the company wants to protect other companies that may hire them, just don't provide reference - that's the biggest red flag there is.

You certainly don't threaten to sue talents over half-million dollar invoices, or spend time publicly attacking a popular suicide victim, twice. Being quietly magnanimous is the easiest way to avoid losing millions by being picked up by thousands of drama tubers and twitter warriors as the drama affects all your other talents, and tends to be much more effective at keeping the ousted Youtuber from running crying to them. Selen was ready to let her company cover up her suicide. Serafi wouldn't have said shit if they hadn't invoiced her for $450K. Be nice and be discreet. It's that simple.

>how sponsors still think that high sub counts are the only things that matter.
all metrics are fundamentally false anyway
CCV? views can be embedded
Subs? Can be botted
Truth is as a marketing guy you need to justify your existence by doing massive advertising campaigns and you seek up the biggest number available and show it the 80 year old boomer at the top paying your checks and who still doesnt get exactly what "streaming" or why would anyone watch someone else play videogames

those can be botted and have been botted in the past, even by "human" bots
k-popers for example were infamous for having multiple videos in repeat so they would harvest views

Both of those sites are notorious for being shady and thus have a fraction of the reach of twitch. Plus there's the stigma of paying for porn which is still strong there which leads to a greater increase in charge backs and the like for those sites and less safety mechanisms, unlike twitch which has the whole bits thing that provides abit of assurance against that.

Rin used shorts that leeched on Gura’s name and other clickbait to get a huge algo boost, going from least subbed to most in her company (and making others there start doing the same)
It resulted in some terrible underage chatters being her audience though to the extent she devoted multiple streams just to wrangling them.
