The main issue is really a lack of well funded micro corporations when everyone wants to fund AI and nothing else and the fact that the scene is getting dragged through the mud though these yabs and closures is really grim. The benefits are dwindling day by day and indie is although getting tougher, is getting much better in terms of DIY and the bar corpos need to meet to convince people to join is much higher.
The only one that has any sort of traction at all out of the microcorps at the moment is Vallure but it is banking on a sizable coomer market which may or may not exist. And although it seems like the green lady is pretty trustworthy, there's nothing like investors wanting to pull money out once they feel they aren't getting their returns to actually spur terrible behavior for short term financial returns. So yeah at the moment, I agree with you the options indies have if they want to go corporate.

We're in the bust phase but it's more of because of Darwinian selection going on - naturally unfit companies with bad management decisions / hiring suboptimal talents who are more likely to cause drama and bring a bad reputation, are more likely to fail. Even NijiEN isn't immune to this logic and they're cushioned by being a billion dollar company backing them - if the Niji part wasn't there in the name and this same collection of EN talents and management ran a small corpo, they'd have probably collapsed by now and either left for dead (like akio was) or become actually-dead.

Phase is successful in part because good talents but also its management as far as we know is actually useful - fishman doesn't really tardwrangle the girls much, he is not capable of it and he has woman managers hence you don't get shit like the Idol Riro scandal. He hired a girl who IIRC literally is a counselor to help his sad girls (Muumi). So, their talents have some actual support from a person who is there specifically just to deal with their issues, instead of trying to run the company finances/growth/merch etc like Fishman has to worry about. Never heard of a similar setup in other small corpos or nijiEN even though it's pretty logical, although I think Cyberlive did have female managers only they were fucking completely MIA was the issue and they made a talent take up that role (which unsurprisingly does not seem to have worked out well considering Cyberlive is cyberdead).
