The companies say they're selling their brand, but all they're really selling is exposure. Too many vtubers are exposing the brands as being hollow. Once you get that exposure, the rest is all downhill, they just take your money and don't provide services commiserate with the amount they want. The vtuber corpo model is inherently garbage and not sustainable long term for most talents and companies, in my opinion. Almost all the benefits of being corpo are one time things that happen when you debut:

After that the only advantages of the corpo is getting helped with merch I guess and maybe minor organizational tasks, MAYBE sponsorships if you do well (which is on you), but plenty of indies manage to do that anyways. So basically, the corpo gives you a leg up when you debut, and then you pay a big percentage of your earnings for perpetuity while barely getting further benefits.
It works for Hololive because the blue dorito buff is massive and you get further benefits down the line like concerts (which you can't realistically do solo, at least not on a Hololive scale), plus Hololive has a lot of "fans of the brand" that won't follow you, but why would you stay 5+ years in a small corpo? Getting a small initial boost and then giving away half your money (or 98%) for years with no further benefit? Knowing that nobody really cares that much about the brand name of those companies? Obviously people eventually are going to take their ball and go home.

Most of the small corpos popped up around the time of NijiEN, where the industry expectation from HoloJP and NijiJP where you get your 3Ds in a year's time or less, and are now part of a crew performing 3D variety segments like the vtubers of yore. Which wouldn't be as feasible or convenient as an indie. Instead, people who have joined corpos have had their 3Ds illogically delayed, and once they have them they can barely stream in them due to constraints about them living overseas and not having a 3D studio.

I disagree, I think that it only looks that way because most corpo's management tries to get away with doing basically nothing, which is just a consequence of so many grifters gravitating towards the "new, cool thing" for a quick buck.
