The trivial bump in interaction from people calling you a tool in the comments of a single video is completely outclassed by the massive dip you take from becoming an internet laughingstock and hemorrhaging regular viewers.

Controversy grifts work by mass-producing bite-sized clickbait content designed specifically to make people perusing active trends angry enough to engage, and it's the absolute lowest rung of clickbait content because it still tends to generate less revenue than clickbait that follows the zeitgeist or pays lipservice to it. Channels rely on controversy when they lack the weight to otherwise compete in trends already saturated with massive clickbait enterprises eclipsing the rest of the search results.

Once one Hanamori member got in they pulled the rest in via nepotism and filled the branch with venomous, serially underachieving losers instead of using the clout the branch had generated from its first successful gens to draw in bigger and more competitive talent.
