I don't think rock dodos would live well on /uuu/ without some help. Much of their diet is shellfish and coconuts that they crack on the jagged rocks at Lorelei. They can eat othet fruits and seeds but they need a high mineral diet for the iron enamel on their beaks. Also they'd be easy targets for hunting animals like foxes and wolves. Sea hawks and sea bears love to eat stray dodos.

For dodos I think it's more of a gentleman's duel than duels to the death. All social birds have pecking orders. So dueling is how dodos decide it. That said since these dodos have strong neck muscles they'd give you a nasty gash with their hook bills if you back them in a corner. Even rabbits will fight to kill if you threaten them with no place to go.

I have more thoughts. Lorelei is not the leader of the island's village. She's simply the librarian of the temple who handles the archives on both the surface and in the depths. Only she knows how to navigate the airless death maze underground. Some even claim Lorelei came from Vitubia, the old world. But Vitubia is all fairy tales. A lot of men protecting the caldera are happy to see Lorelei's lovely face when they can. But Lorelei only has one guy in her life. And that's the dodo who leads the flock nesting on the library grounds.

I'm going to let this idea rest.

I'm home. Dodos don't have fins nor webbed feet and their wings are mostly vestigial. Their feathers aren't oily so they absorb water easy. That said dodos are not afraid of the water. As long as they have some solid ground they can pull themselves out of the water most of the time. They'll even use their beaks to pull along the ground underwater. Though if the water's too deep they'll drown.

In the aquaduct creeks dodos bathe at the spouts. Their feathers might be fluffy but they are like Kiwi feathers, which is more like fur. And in hot summer days dodos soak their feathers to keep cool. Sometimes dodos even use mud.

It's mostly for ground flightless birds. In the dodo's case its to keep them cool on hot days. That said dodos do have small flappy wings. They use these wings to control turning when they sprint like ostriches. The wings also help guide their fall when they swing from their beaks. So they do have some flight feathers.

Also some sexual dimorphism. Male dodos have rusty red bulbs at the "nose" of their beaks (at the end above the hook). Females do not. And while the hook is long it's not rediculously huge that's it's over half the size of their bodies. The hook is just long enough it can pick holes on the rocks for support strength and grab coconut seeds with the bottom.

Maybe I could write about traveling in /vnug/ during these tumultuous times, that would probably be pretty martial. I wanted to write a bit today, but I felt a bit off, think I'm still recovering from the sleepless holofes+vtl weekend.

Laia Page is the archivist, curator, and head librarian of the Lorelei Caldera Temple Archives. Nobody knows where she came from. She's been working as the curator of the ancient library ever since the project's founding. Rumor has it that she's been curating the library for far longer. Some say she's as old as the world. Though everyone jokes about her youthful looks Laia is very mature and no-nonsense about her job. Laia doesn't have much of personal relationships. She's either married to her job or to her research of the library dodos. Laia started the Lorelei Rock Dodo Domestication Project after watching the dodos adapt to trusting humans in the village. The dodos were on the verge of extinction until humans resettled here. And through conservation efforts the dodos thrived. They've become mascots of the library. And the dodos did lead the settlers to fertile land, water, and the ancient temple. So with Laia's help we're helping to research dodos nesting and breeding habits to ensure dodos and humans can live together as friends, family, and sometimes food.

I would say it’s more a culture thing that ultimately stemmed from salamoim psychology differing from humans (insert crime statistics here) but it’s not strictly crime rate so to speak since dueling’s sanctioned in /vnug/ like how it was back in the days, so a lot of the street fights death would be technically legal as long as they follow the code of conduct

Iirc from my tactical game days, the most efficient way to store a hex map in memory is to just have it as a flat array indexed bidimensionaly where you consider every other row is offset by half a cell to the right, and the adjacencies of each cell is both cells to the left and right, and the 4 cells above and below it.
I love these kind of graphics. If you only wanna use ASCII characters it'll probably look like this, if you don't mind using some unicode characters you could use these: ¯ to make your cells a bit more symmetrical.

yeah thats pretty much what I have laid out. its python so might do some tricky stuff like having a dictionary instead of a list to make lookups based on ID or position faster, but yeah

You don't use the shell to cook the soup. The shell will burn long before soup's edible. That said a clean dried polished shell can be used to serve soup though it's only for presentation. Turtle shells are still useful tools as bowls and furniture.

I'd rather have clam chowder or smoked oysters. Rock lobster surf and turf with dodo thighs is a delicacy.

I'll say, divegrass and LOTB rely heavily on a few skilled individuals to do a lot of (or all) the heavy lifting for aesthetics, might get fewer signups if that burden is fully left up to the thread.
Then again, designing a serviceable livery is much easier than putting together a CAW or a divegrass team.

So I can see a tall lithe woman who's body is half a tree. She has long green hair and a pair of flowering cherry blossom branch on the top of her head. Her toga robe only covers one breast. But saplification is both the gift and curse of the forest in /uuu/. Turning human biology into something the forest sees as "more natural" is dictated both by how dedicated to Fauna the individual is, and how "deep" into the forests the person goes.

Not particularly. Given enough time, any sapling, regardless of station or devotion would return to the forest.
A Matre with that much saplification that hadn't turned to the forest though would have to be very very old and have some reason to try to retain their human form. It's something they would have to actively choose and fight against.

In a sense yes. This is why visitors can't just go running into the woods. Even the squirrels that visited with consent in the previous world and mostly stayed close to shore left with green tails.
Anyone that didn't worship Fauna that just walked straight into the forests would have their skin turn into bark and their blood into sap, etc.
Saplings live in /uuu/ by way of pure devotion and thus the forests let them keep the form they choose. For a time.

I couldnt say what their purpose would be. It would have be something that, isn't against the health or sanctity of the forest (she wouldnt be a Matre if this were the case), but might be something she felt would in the long run be better for the human side of the sapling civilization, and she, for whatever reason, needed to be around for it instead of passing on the knowledge to a new generation.
As far as age, I'd have to ballpark a Matre that has saplification on half of their body at something like 200-400 years.
