I'm thinking about dodos again. So the rock dodos of /vtwbg/ actually survived thanks to the ancient librarians. Before the ancient librarians came there was very little fertile land. So dodo territory was small. Once the ancient librarians filled the shallow quarries with fertile soil the fertile lands expanded. That said nobody knows what happened to the ancient librarians. When they disappeared eventually nature grew back to reclaim their settlement. The tiny jungle expanded quickly in the fallow fields thanks to imported soil and irrigation creeks from the aquaducts. And when the jungles expanded the dodos flourished. The Dodos got bigger from more abundant fruits. And they started to lay eggs three times a year instead of two. That said the dodos are kept in check by natural predators like sea hawks, sea bears (related to sea lions, who are also related to bears), and rock tortoises. Now the dodos are still wild and development of the new settlement has diminished half of the jungle. But the settlers have taken a liking to the funny hookbeak birds. So we're trying to domesticate them.

Contrary to pop culture rock dodos are intelligent. They aren't corvid smart but they are smart enough to remember foraging and fishing spots. The new settlers follow dodos trails to find the best crabbing spots. That said dodos are still dumb and act on impulse rather than logic. But with the anatomy of the birds they just waddle, hop, climb, and keep moving all day. Dodos in captivity are tricky due to their curious nature to wander wherever they please. At first dodos hate fences. But eventually they learned to climb fences to escape predators. And once dodos got into habit of remembering when crop harvests happen they learned to eat other pests and vermin like mice and locusts that try to eat crops.

The rock dodo has grown twice their size since the new settlers arrived. Which is great because the dodos themselves have good gamey meat on their legs. And some dodos developed friendships with people in a way pigeons sometimes do.

The rock dodo is the antithesis of the real world dodo. What if the dodos were smart, strong, and agile enough to survive a changing environment given the opportunity?

We are talking about dodos here. Dodos only lay one egg at a time compared to chickens' clutch of 2-3. And the dodos are a bit more intelligent than chickens only for their path-finding and memorization skills.

>>71353713
That's what I was going for. If Dodos still existed today they'd be similar to Kiwis. But unlike Kiwis dodos have more versatile beaks and digestion systems to eat a variety of things. Its more like what if Dodos were given a chance to thrive again and how they would adapt. Since the island doesn't have much vegetation these dodos would be more adapted to eat shellfish in times of scarcity. And the coconut cracking trick on the spires also works on crabs, mussels, and oysters.

>> No.71356100

The thing about big beaks is thay you need big muscles to use them. There's a breed of parrot that crushes coconuts with its beak. Its beak is always open and its tongue works like a finger to hold the coconut. But that bird is specialized in only eating coconuts and nuts. Rock dodos are similar but they have more versatile beaks. Rock dodos would have more muscle in their necks to help them rock climb. However the muscle also gives them strength to lift and slam coconuts into jagged rocks. Once the coconut is cracked the beak is used to pry open the coconut. And within a few hundred generations dodos learned to smash shellfish with coconuts and stones and changing their diet from herbivore to omnivore.

>> No.71359975

They're using their beak to climb? It's hook-shaped, so I guess that works, I wonder what weird unexpected things birds use their beaks for.

>> No.71360337

>>71359975
Dodo climbing is not scailing steep cliffs. Its more like using the beak to vault over taller rocks and hills. They also use their beaks to climb stairs of the library ruins.

I'd also imagine male Dodos are aggressive. They chase off predators and people who get too close to the fledgelings and eggs. Dodos only lay one egg at a time. Which is why males are protective of brooding females.

>> No.71360486

>>71354783
If they're smart could they also be ok pets? What's the life expectancy in captivity?

>> No.71361205

>>71360486
Intelligence does not always make good pets. It's about the wild instinct. The dodos learned to co-exist with humans but most still live in the reed jungles. Domestication is up in the air. Captivity is said loosely. Dodos need a large territory to explore. Dodos that live near humans under veterinary care have six to eight years life expectancy. Wild dodos have three to five. And dodos only lay a single eggs 2-3 times a year for 1-3 years in adult hood. About half of the eggs hatch. And in the wild about a third of the chicks get eaten. Fortunately the library itself has lots of Dodo nests. So we can at least study nesting habits. Dodos are getting more confident around people thanks to the pigeon in them. They get along with the chickens at least.

And while using the momentum and speed of the landing it gobbles up the prey head first. Also sea bears would infamously go head to head with sharks and crocodiles.

Ok sorry that Im bringing the dodos back up if other people wanted to move off of it
There have been a few posts that we agreed with that the Librarian Order have been taking care of the dodos. Does this imply the establishment of anti-poaching laws on the island?
Even though The Order is primarily focused on just protecting the library, will they step in if external forces start killing certain wildlife?

>> No.71388323

I think it's silly but I thought up a full name: Captain Merrybelle Charloette Onirinrin. She goes by her middle name as only royalty, close friends, and family can call her by her first name. On the ship only the first mate can call Charolette by her first name as he is her best friend. Though they aren't lovers (but they did have sex once, only once). First mate has got his own family at home somewhere in the sea. He's well aware of Charloette's bloodline and the men who are doomed by her lust. First mate's name can be something like Richard Murray. He's like a big brother father figure to the crew and the only man with common sense at times.

Just some ideas. Do as you will. Don't know how Charloette lost her arm and leg. She has both eyes but they're heterochromia like Marine's. The eye under the eyepatch is trained to see in the dark under the ship's deck. She fights with a pistol, blunderbuss, and cutlass. The blunderbuss is custom built to work with the captain's hook hand. Again. Ideas.

Given the limited food resources of the island I'm pretty sure some of those dodos get eaten, though how many is probably regulated so they're not eaten into extinction. If the island is uninhabited then there's no rules. But now we have civilization. So I think the locals will fish and hunt on commission for trade and military vessels. But the locals choose which animals to hunt and fish because they know the island's ecosystem. Of course there will be poachers who sneak off the ships and hunt anyway. And if they get caught they will be punished.

Eating Dodo is not uncommon. It's like eating Capybara. You eat them once in a while when they are abundant. Otherwise there's better protein options from chicken, eggs, sea birds, fish, crabs, lobster, and shellfish.

But yeah hunting dodos and other land animals are forbidden unless you're a settler and only when dodos are over populating. We should come up with general trade commodities like pearl oysters, bamboo and reed crafts, and gemstones. Those would be traded for more expensive goods like tobacco, medicine, soup, bullion, curry, and salted meats. The island would also have gold coins from researchers and traders too. Though gold and silver is usually reserved for trading industrial goods, weapons, metal tools, and gunpowder.

>So one of the saplings told me they were in some world building project.
>They won't tell me where because it's not a good website.
>And the saplings have a nation named Uuuuuuuuu.
>*Silly Kirin giggle*
>I know it's silly.
>But it's so like saplings to live like druids and name their country after Kirin noises.
>*Kirin laugh*
>The sapling was telling me about animals from other countries.
>KFP has actual phoenixes but they're squat, fat, and cute.
>Oh and there's this island...
>I think it was called Lorelei.
>I asked if the people are mermaids living there.
>The sapling said there are no mermaids, sadly.
>But there are turtles and dodo birds.
>*Pauses to read chat*
>Yeah and the turtles have claws that they use to climb cliffs so they don't get eaten.
>And they bite holes in your ships.
>So you have to scrape them off or else your ship sinks.
>But people hunt them to make them into soup.
>It's so sad!
>*Reads chat*
>"Yeah if turtles ate holes in my boat I'd make them soup too."
>That's mean!
>Oh and the dodo birds here are beeg.
>They're almost three feet tall.
>They're plump and fluffy.
>They have hook beaks that let them climb rocks.
>They smash coconuts on rocks.
>They even smash oysters with coconuts.
>These are not dumb birds.
>They're cute when they waddle around looking for food.
>They actually like people who settled there because we give them rice.
>I thought rice was bad for birds.
>It expands in their tummies and causes problems.
>Maybe they're big enough to eat rice.
>But there's this dodo around the village.
>And what he likes to do is sit in people's laps.
>*Kirin laughs*
>Can you imagine this big fat dodo bird just walking up to you and hopping in your lap?
>Yeah! I'd pet him for sure.
>"Careful he doesn't leave any presents."
>Yeah he wouldn't sit for long.
>*Kirin laughs*
>I want a pet dodo bird now.
>Maybe we can have him live in the forest with the capybaras?

In worlds of ink and realms of thought,
Where authors weave the tales they've wrought,
There lies a team, both fierce and keen,
With dreams of realms yet to be seen.

Their players are wordsmiths, masters of lore,
Crafting worlds with each metaphor.
They build with care, with intricate design,
Their imaginations know no confine.

In this team of speculative might,
Each player's story shines so bright.
They write of dragons, planets, and more,
Their creativity a boundless store.

On the field of play, they gather round,
Their pens as swords, their voices sound.
With each stroke of ink, they make their stand,
A team of writers, a creative band.

But across the pitch, a rival waits,
A team of idols, famed as greats.
Jewish VTubers, with charm and grace,
They bring joy to many, in every space.

Their presence glows, their energy pure,
Their fans adore, their spirits sure.
With every dance and every song,
They capture hearts, where they belong.

In this clash of worlds, the stage is set,
The writers' words against idols met.
A battle fierce, but filled with glee,
As two unique teams clash in harmony.

The football flies, the crowd erupts,
As both sides fight, with passion abrupt.
The writers' minds, a vast terrain,
The idols' hearts, a vibrant refrain.

But in the end, as the whistle blows,
And the final score, the truth bestows,
It matters not who claimed the prize,
For in their hearts, each team shall rise.

For whether crafting worlds or singing songs,
They each belong where they belong.
In realms of fiction or realms of light,
They shine as stars, both day and night.

So let us cheer for these teams of might,
In their passion, in their flight.
For in this game of words and song,
They inspire us all to belong.

The onion stock I used really helped out bring the flavor of the old stakes. Steaks were dry but fell apart enough for the last minute simmer. I just made onions for French onion soup but used flour to make a roux instead of bread. Then I turned the beef and onion stock into gravy with salt and pepper.

I should try this again with a fatty beef roast. I want to try slow cooking either beef shank or a whole chicken into broth next. Yeah this might be sock posting but I'm learning about making my own stocks and broth. Which gives me an insight to older simpler soup recipes. A good stock makes the difference between a tasty soup and a filling soup.

Making soup or stock over an open fire back in the day is a laborous task that takes all day. You have to stoke the fire. Move the pot or cauldron so soup doesn't burn. Watch it simmer so it doesn't get too hot or cold. Then pick out all the meat and bone bits if you don't have a slotted spoon or mesh. And you have to squeeze it through a cloth to filter. You're doing this in the kitchen on top of preparing and cooking other meals and ingredients for the soup. Chefs are a lifeline for troops as they cook both food and medicines all day over the fire. Assuming you have enough rations for it.

Soups are a good way to "eat more" by "cooking less".

Some notes on deadbeat cooking in the mountains:
>Thinly slicing meat to increase contact area with enzymatic liquids
>"Braising" in fluids with digestive capabilities to breakdown strong collagens
>Using powdered dry ice in "dough" and "frying" it in cold water. The carbon dioxide evaporates and creates bubbles in the dough, similar to how water evaporating when the dough is added to hot oil creates bubbles.
>Working antifreeze proteins into various foods to keep them pliable and easy to eat even below freezing temperatures.

I think the main thing is that I'd want to have something to replace gluten, so that the dough can stay soft even at low temperatures. Kinda need that so that bubbles can grow inside of it. I think anti-freezing proteins can help is not freeze solid, but some kind of spec-bio'd product might be needed for the gluten. Maybe a species of cryofungi can create proteins that can do this.
